Preseason Outlook

Gardner, a light-hitting speedster with the patience of a leadoff man, earned a spot on the opening day roster last year and got regular at-bats off and on, starting whenever the Yankees got tired of Melky Cabrera. He got hot during the summer months and might not have tailed off so much at the end of the season if he hadn't broken his left thumb and missed all of August. Now with Cabrera and Johnny Damon both out of the picture, Gardner stands to play every day for the Yankees. Since he'll bat ninth, he won't score as many runs as most on-base types, but he has a chance to steal 40-plus bases without killing you in batting average. Anyone who steals that many bases has value in Rotisserie leagues, and 40 steals would make Gardner at least viable in Head-to-Head leagues as well. Just don't expect even a hint of power from him.
