| Vinnie Pestano tabbed interim closer |
by Jeff Lippman | CBSSports.com (5/27/13) Indians manager Terry Francona said Monday that reliver Vinnie Pestano will be the first option to close games with Chris Perez on the disabled list. That honor will not go to Joe Smith or Cody Allen, MLB.com reports.
The 28-year-old Pestano just blew his second save after he allowed four runs on four hits and two walks over an inning in Boston Saturday. He's gone 1-1 with four holds, two blown saves and a 5.25 ERA.

| Cleveland in search of closer |
by Jeff Lippman | CBSSports.com (5/27/13) The Indians are in need of a closer and there is currently no word on who that will be after the Tribe placed Chris Perez on the disabled list Monday, the Cleveland Plain Dealer reports.
Cleveland called up Nick Hagadone from Triple-A Columbus, but he'll be middle relief help. The logical choices are Joe Smith and Cody Allen, and Brett Myers also has experience closing games. That said, Myers has been used as a starter for Cleveland and is also on the shelf.
Vinnie Pestano could be another option, but he just came off the DL and has shown lowered velocity to this point.

| Joe Smith records first career save |
by Jeff Lippman | CBSSports.com (4/3/13) Indians reliever Joe Smith came on to pitch the bottom of the 11th inning Wednesday night in Toronto. Cleveland called upon Smith after Mark Reynolds homered to take a one-run lead as Chris Perez already had blown a save.
Smith went 1-2-3 in the 11th as he struck out a batter and secured the Cleveland victory for his first career save. He'd made 370 career appearances before notching his first save.

| Smith healthy again for Tribe |
by Jeff Lippman | CBSSports.com (2/17/13) Cleveland reliever Joe Smith has declared himself "ready to go" after he was able to play catch for a second straight day Sunday, reports the Cleveland Plain Dealer. Smith was dealing with an oblique issue that he's put behind him. "He's going exactly as we hoped," said Indians manager Terry Francona. "He'll be just fine."

| Smith making progress |
by Igor Mello | CBSSports.com (2/16/13) Cleveland reliever Joe Smith, who is dealing with a left oblique injury, played catch up to a distance of 105 feet with no issues during Saturday's workout, according to MLB.com. Smith is expected to take a day off Sunday before resuming his program Monday. "He's doing really well," Indians manager Terry Francona said. "He's going exactly like we hoped and he'll be just fine."

| Joe Smith has two straight seasons of sub-3.00 ERA, with a 1.13 WHIP over that span. His major downside, though, is a lack of strikeouts. Owners in 4x4 leagues won't have a problem with this, but nearly every other owner will. Smith is solid if you need to keep your ERA and WHIP low, but he loses value because of the low strikeout rate. He has little value in Fantasy formats. (Updated 1/4/13) |
