Antonelli to compete for 3B job: Matt Antonelli, who was signed by the Orioles to a minor league deal last month, will be given a chance to vie for the starting job at third base, according to MASN.com. Orioles executive vice president Dan Duquette said that he views both Antonelli and Chris Davis, who started 31 games for Baltimore this past season, as candidates to be the regular third baseman next year. "If you look at his on-base and his slugging, that's pretty good if it translates to the big leagues," Duquette said of Antonelli. He posted a .393 on-base percentage with eight home runs in 86 games with Triple-A Syracuse in 2011. Antonelli has not been back to the majors since debuting with the Padres in 2008. Fantasy Analysis
While Duquette cites Antonelli's power, he is much more of a doubles hitter than a home run threat. However, Antonelli's ability to get on base could enable him to give Davis -- a slugging home run hitter -- a run for his money. If Antonelli wins regular playing time out of spring training, he is a player to target in AL-only leagues and possibly in deeper mixed leagues as well. (Updated 12/01/2011).
