Preseason Outlook

Fowler surprised by winning a starting job in a crowded Rockies outfield last spring, but he had to fight all year to keep it. In fact, you might even say he lost that fight considering he was the lesser half of a lefty-righty with Carlos Gonzalez by season's end. Overall, you have to consider his rookie season a success -- he finished eighth in Rookie of the Year voting, after all -- but he does have some issues that make him a questionable Fantasy option entering this season. A 24-year-old who only recently took up switch hitting, he still has plenty of work to do from the left side of the plate, batting .240 there compared to .321 against lefties. He didn't run much after tying a modern rookie record with five steals on April 27, stealing just 18 bases the rest of the way. And even if his power comes sooner than expected, how often will the Rockies play him with Gonzalez, Brad Hawpe and Seth Smith on the roster? He's a late-round flier in Fantasy, particularly Rotisserie leagues because of his steals, but nothing more. (Updated 1/18/10)
