| Dexter Fowler showing 'signs' of emerging from slump |
by Michael Hurcomb | CBSSports.com (5/19/13) Before Saturday's game against the Giants, Rockies manager Walt Weiss said he was beginning to see "signs" of outfielder Dexter Fowler emerging from his hitting slump, according to The Denver Post.
"(Friday) night, (in the sixth inning), he flied out to center. Dex took that swing that I saw early this season and this spring," Weiss said. "He walked by and I said, 'You're back.' And he said, 'Yeah.' I know he ended up striking out in his last at-bat, but some of the swings he ended up taking shows me he's ready to bust out."
Fowler responded Saturday with three hits for the first time since the season opener. He's batting .400 (6 for 15) with a double and two RBI in his last three games after starting May with a .128 average (5 for 39) through his first 11 games.

| Slumping Dexter Fowler gets some rest |
by Jeff Lippman | CBSSports.com (5/13/13) Slumping Rockies center fielder Dexter Fowler received a night off Monday in Chicago. That said, his absence doesn't have anything to do with his recent right hip flexor soreness, MLB.com reports.
Manager Walt Weiss doesn't believe the hip has anything to do with his 2-for-26 slump.
"For me, I just felt like it was a good day to give Dex a little break," Weiss said. "You try to have a feel for those things with your players and watch them closely. This was one of those days it would be good for him to have a day off and get back at it tomorrow.
"Everybody, at some point offensively, is going to get beat up in this league. You grind though those things and try to work your way through it. He got off to a great start, and I think we all see him turning into an outstanding player before our eyes. I'm not worried about him. I'm just giving him a day off."

| Power sapped from Dexter Fowler |
by Bill Passonno | CBSSports.com (5/13/13) During the opening month of the season, the longest stretch Rockies outfielder Dexter Fowler went without a home run was 10 games as he went deep eight times -- more than his season total from three of his first four years as a full-time player. But he matched that mark again Sunday after going 1 for 5 with three strikeouts in an 8-2 win at St. Louis.
Fowler has not homered since April 29, which also represents his only homer in the past 21 games. The power slump has resulted in a meager .129 slugging percentage during the month of May following a .621 clip in April.

| Dexter Fowler held hitless in return |
by Igor Mello | CBSSports.com (5/5/13) Rockies outfielder Dexter Fowler endured a quiet afternoon in his first game back from a hip injury Sunday against the Rays.
Fowler finished 0 for 5 with three strikeouts in an 8-3 defeat. He is hitting .295/.403/.581 with eight home runs and 15 RBI. He has gone 3 for 14 in his last four games (three starts).

| Dexter Fowler had been something of a frustration for Fantasy owners over his first three full seasons in the Rockies' outfield. His ability to leg out infield hits and pile up triples attested to his speed, but he hadn't been able to deliver stolen bases consistently. He plays home games at Coors Field, but he would provide only a handful of homers. And despite high batting averages on balls in play, Fowler's overall batting average was mired in the .260s due to frequent strikeouts. Last season, Fowler shook off some of these annoying trends. He provided just a dozen steals, but he used his speed and gap power to produce a .393 BABIP and .300 overall batting average. He also showed his first signs of some home run power, launching a career-high 13 bombs. It's unlikely that Fowler will hit .300 or higher again this season unless he can reduce his strikeouts, and he doesn't help enough with homers or steals to be worth pursuing in mixed Rotisserie leagues prior to the late rounds. However, because Fowler can be relied on for triples and walks, owners can target him in the middle rounds of mixed Head-to-Head league drafts. (Updated 1/2/13) |
