Miguel Gonzalez takes loss, Orioles eliminated Wednesday
|by R.J. White | CBSSports.com|
|(10/15/14) Orioles pitcher Miguel Gonzalez was stuck with a loss Wednesday, allowing two earned runs (one earned) on four hits and four walks in 5 2/3 innings while striking out four in his team's 2-1 defeat against the Royals as the Orioles were swept in the ALCS and eliminated from the postseason.
Gonzalez (0-1) saw both runs score on an infield groundball in the first inning, as catcher Caleb Joseph was unable to hang on to the ball on a play at the plate, with a second runner coming home as Joseph chased the ball down. Gonzalez hit two batters on the day as he continued to deal with control issues in his first appearance during this postseason. The Orioles fall in their first ALCS appearance since 1997.
Orioles sticking with Miguel Gonzalez for Game 4

|(10/14/14) The Orioles will send Miguel Gonzalez to the mound for Game 4 against the Royals, according to MASN.
The move was announced early Tuesday, but there was some thought manager Buck Showalter could change his mind with the season on the line. Chris Tillman, who pitched Friday, may have been available for the start, but Showalter confirmed he would go with Gonzalez.
Gonzalez posted a 3.23 ERA over 159 innings. He hasn't pitched since September 28.
Miguel Gonzalez draws Game 4 start Wednesday
|by R.J. White | CBSSports.com|
|(10/14/14) Orioles pitcher Miguel Gonzalez has been confirmed as the starter for Game 4 of the American League Championship Series Wednesday, masnsports.com reports.
Gonzalez hasn't pitched in a game since tossing five scoreless innings on Sept. 28. He finished the season with a 10-9 record, 3.23 ERA and 111:51 K:BB ratio in 159 innings. Gonzalez faced the Royals once during the regular season, allowing four runs (three earned) in six innings in a loss on April 27.
Wei-Yin Chen, Miguel Gonzalez set to pitch for Orioles in KC
|by Marty Gitlin | CBSSports.com|
|(10/11/14) As expected, Buck Showalter has tabbed left-hander Wei-Yin Chen to start Game 3 of the American League Championship Series for the Orioles in Kansas City on Monday. Righty Miguel Gonzalez is set to pitch the following day.
Chen had been in consideration to pitch Game 2 on Saturday, but the nod went to Bud Norris. Gonzalez finished the regular season strong with just 10 runs allowed in his last 51 1/3 innings pitched.
|2014 summary: Miguel Gonzalez posted the lowest ERA (3.23) of his three-year career, even though he owned a 4.56 mark at the end of June. He then embarked on a string of 11 starts that produced 10 quality starts and a 2.03 ERA for the Orioles. With just 44 strikeouts over that 75 1/3-inning span, Gonzalez relied on a 2.3 BB/9 ratio and a .214 batting average on balls in play to stymie opponents. While Gonzalez probably needed some luck to prevent hits at that rate, he helped himself by inducing popups on 13 percent of hit balls during his hot streak.
Playing time status: Gonzalez made only 26 starts plus one relief appearance in 2014, as he spent time on the disabled list with an oblique injury and was briefly demoted to the minors in August. He has never made 30 starts or pitched 180 innings in a season, and while he could cross those thresholds this season, his lack of a track record in that regard puts a damper on his value.
2015 outlook: The combination of a high flyball rate and Oriole Park at Camden Yards as a home venue could be big trouble for Gonzalez, though his ability to coax infield flies helps him to limit the damage. Just as problematic is Gonzalez's lack of a history with high innings counts. He's skilled enough to be worth drafting in deeper mixed leagues, but that's his ceiling.
