Orioles pitcher Miguel Gonzalez strikes out eight in win Tuesday

by Brandon Wise | CBSSports.com
(5/19/15) Orioles pitcher Miguel Gonzalez allowed four runs on five hits in seven innings of work in Baltimore's 9-4 win over the Mariners on Tuesday.

Gonzalez had issues in the first when he allowed a leadoff home run to Seth Smith. Gonzalez recovered though and struck out two of the last four batters in the inning. Then in the third, Gonzalez surrendered a three-run shot to Nelson Cruz. However, his offense had his back, providing eight runs in support to keep him in line for the win.

"He got better as the game went on," manager Buck Showalter said per MASN Sports. "He threw some zeros up after we scored and got back in it, so that's pretty typical of Miguel."

Gonzalez, now 5-2, moved his ERA to 3.24 in 50 innings of work this season. He will look to keep rolling Sunday against the Marlins.

"It seems like when there's a leadoff home run against you, you've always got a pretty good chance," Showalter said. "I don't ever remember losing when the other team hits a leadoff home run. Now that I said that, somebody will check it and find it's happened 30 times."

Orioles pitcher Chris Tillman won't start on Tuesday

by Brandon Wise | CBSSports.com
(5/17/15) Orioles pitcher Chris Tillman was scheduled to start on Sunday, but had his outing pushed back to Tuesday because of back stiffness. Now, Tillman will also not start on Tuesday as manager Buck Showalter will go with Miguel Gonzalez and is leaning toward Wei-Yin Chen on Wednesday, according to MASN Sports.

Tillman missed his last start with an illness and is now dealing with the back issue. It is unclear when Tillman's next start would come. He is 2-5 with a 6.34 ERA in 38 1/3 innings of work so far this season.

Orioles' Miguel Gonzalez earns win vs. Blue Jays

by R.J. White | CBSSports.com
(5/13/15) Orioles pitcher Miguel Gonzalez picked up a win on Wednesday, allowing one unearned run on three hits and three walks in 7 2/3 innings while striking out five in his team's 6-1 victory over the Blue Jays.

Gonzalez (4-2) threw seven scoreless innings on just 75 pitches before giving up his only run in the eighth on a passed ball.

"Just being aggressive in the zone the whole time and not trying to do too much," Gonzalez said of his pitch efficiency, per MASNSports.com. "My last outing wasn't the greatest, but this time around I worked hard and it paid off. Caleb (Joseph) did a really good job back there calling the game and mixing in pitches. From the get-go, we did a really good job and the defense kept us in the game. We played really good D."

It's the second time in his last three starts that the pitcher hasn't allowed an earned run.

Gonzalez owns a 2.93 ERA and 34:17 K:BB ratio in 43 innings. The Orioles have a pair of off-days on tap, but Gonzalez will likely face the Mariners on either Tuesday or Wednesday.

Orioles starter Miguel Gonzalez scored on early in Friday's loss

by Ted Leshinski | Staff Writer
(5/8/15) Orioles starter Miguel Gonzalez (3-2) was knocked around for five runs on five hits in five innings Friday to take the loss against the Yankees.

Gonzalez was victimized by a two-run homer in the first inning from Brian McCann and a two-run bases load double from Carlos Beltran in the third.

"It's tough because we know that they are hitting the ball really well and we can't make any mistakes, especially early in the game," Gonzalez said. "And that's why I couldn't go more than four innings -- [I] had [nearly] 80 pitches and things didn't go our way."

The outing was Gonzalez's shortest since April 2014.

"You've got to go out there and try not to nibble too much," he said. "I was missing a little bit, but that's part of the game. Sometimes you have it, sometimes you don't."

Gonzalez's next turn in the rotation will be Wednesday against the Blue Jays.

Orioles pitcher Miguel Gonzalez goes 7 2/3 scoreless in win

by Brandon Wise | CBSSports.com
(5/3/15) Orioles pitcher Miguel Gonzalez tossed 7 2/3 scoreless innings in Baltimore's 4-0 win over the Rays Saturday. Gonzalez scattered four hits in the start with six strikeouts and one walk.

Gonzalez only allowed one baserunner to reach third in the first seven innings of work, who was left stranded in the third inning when Steven Souza grounded out.

"I think from the get-go, my fastball was pretty good, both sides of the plate, and we played a really good ballgame overall," Gonzalez said. "Everything was great."

Then in the eighth, Gonzalez got two outs, but put two men on base before manager Buck Showalter pulled him.

"He was carrying a couple extra clicks with the fastball," Showalter said. "But to be carrying that extra fastball is one thing. It's having command of it. He got a lot of first-pitch get-me-over breaking-ball strikes, too."

Gonzalez, now 3-1, lowered his ERA to 2.59. He will look to keep rolling Friday against the Yankees.
