Preseason Outlook

The Braves decided to make their center fielder of the future their center fielder of the present in 2009, and when Schafer homered twice in his first three games, their decision seemed like a good one. But Schafer wouldn't homer again in his remaining 157 at-bats, and his numbers had gotten so bad by the end of May that the Braves demoted him to the minors and made a deal for Nate McLouth. You could blame Schafer's quick downfall on the wrist injury that eventually required season-ending surgery, which would make sense considering he initially injured the wrist during the first series of the season. Still, he'll have to leap over a few players, McLouth included, to reclaim a predominant spot on the major-league roster. At age 23, Schafer still has a promising future, but you can leave him for NL-only and long-term keeper leagues. (Updated 1/19/10)
