(9/5/14) Diamondbacks reliever Brad Ziegler received a second opinion on his left knee Friday, and the team announced he will undergo season-ending surgery Tuesday to repair damage.
Ziegler is dealing with cartilage damage in the knee, and has decided to undergo surgery after trying to pitch through it since June. He has struggled in the second half of the season, posting a 6.62 ERA since the All-Star break, compared to a 3.49 mark overall.
Ziegler is expected to be ready for the start of spring training next season, but will not pitch again this season.

(9/3/14) Diamondbacks pitcher Brad Ziegler took a loss Tuesday, giving up a walkoff home run in his team's 2-1 defeat against the Padres.
Ziegler (5-3) retired the first batter he faced Tuesday, but Cory Spangenberg connected on his first major-league home run to send the Diamondbacks home with a loss. Ziegler owns a 3.55 ERA and 53:24 K:BB ratio in 66 innings.
|Brad Ziegler ended the 2013 season as arguably the most-valuable arm in the Diamondbacks' bullpen. After opening the year as a right-handed setup man, Ziegler took over as closer in mid-July after J.J. Putz and Heath Bell both faltered in the role. Luckily for Arizona, Ziegler brought stability to the ninth inning. Ziegler recorded a career-high 13 saves and eight wins, while posting a 2.22 ERA and 1.14 WHIP. He also struck out 44 batters in 73 innings. Ziegler proved last season being a full-time closer isn't an issue, but Arizona acquired Addison Reed in the offseason, meaning Ziegler is headed for a middle relief or setup role to start 2014. He could be a fallback option for saves, but Ziegler is best left for Rotisserie leagues and formats that reward for holds.
