Diamondbacks reliever Brad Ziegler notches second save of the year

by Brandon Wise | CBSSports.com
(5/24/15) Diamondbacks relief pitcher Brad Ziegler worked a nearly perfect ninth inning in Arizona's 4-3 win on Sunday over the Cubs, earning his second save of the season.

Ziegler made quick workof the first two hitters of the inning, needing just four pitches. After allowing a single to Starlin Castro, Ziegler finished things off by forcing Miguel Montero to pop out to left field. Ziegler now owns a 0.86 ERA in 21 innings of work.

D-Backs' Hale chooses Brad Ziegler to close out game Thursday

by Michael Hurcomb | CBSSports.com
(5/21/15) Diamondbacks manager Chip Hale went to reliever Brad Ziegler in the ninth inning Thursday against the Marlins. Ziegler was able to preserve a one-run lead, picking up his first save this season during a 7-6 win.

Ziegler, who has 34 career saves, struck out Giancarlo Stanton to lead off the bottom of the ninth. Martin Prado then flied out to center before Ziegler finished off the inning with a strike out of Christian Yelich. He needed just nine pitches (eight strikes) to retire the side.

Hale leaned on Ziegler and Enrique Burgos to close out games against the Marlins. Burgos recorded saves Monday and Tuesday before Ziegler earned the save Thursday.

D-Backs ready to go with Enrique Burgos in closer's role?

by Michael Hurcomb | CBSSports.com
(5/20/15) After recording his second save in as many days Tuesday against the Marlins, Diamondbacks manager Chip Hale stopped short of naming Enrique Burgos the team's new closer. However, Hale is definitely pleased by the recent results.

"It's going to make it harder on us now in the ninth," Hale said, per The Arizona Republic. "We have more guys who can pitch in the ninth. It's fantastic."

Hale opted to pitch Burgos in the ninth Tuesday since Brad Ziegler was unavailable after throwing two innings Monday.

"I love it," Burgos said of closing games. "I just like the adrenaline going on, the pressure. Everybody's watching you. I think it's a good feeling."

When asked if he will continue to use Burgos in the closer's role, a smiling Hale said, "We'll see. We'll see what the matchups look like."

Hale: Addison Reed out for now as Diamondbacks closer

by Marty Gitlin | CBSSports.com
(5/15/15) Right-hander Addison Reed has both Diamondbacks saves this season. Who will get the third is anybody's guess.

Chip Hale has bounced Reed from the closer role, though he anticipates reinstating him once he finds his groove, per azcentral.com. He added that veteran submariner Brad Ziegler could be an option unless he is needed earlier in a game, which indicates that the current plan is closer-by-committee.

Reed has struggled throughout the year. He has allowed eight runs on 15 hits in 10 innings pitched. The last straw was Wednesday, when he blew a save by giving up four runs on three hits in one inning against Washington.

Diamondbacks' Brad Ziegler proving durable after knee surgery

by Brandon Wise | CBSSports.com
(4/26/15) Diamondbacks pitcher Brad Ziegler has shown his strength early on in 2015. The veteran pitcher has tossed 7 2/3 scoreless innings with four strikeouts so far this season, drawing the attention of manager Chip Hale, reports AZCentral.com.

"He's pitched great," Hale said. "He's come in innings and got out of them. He's started innings and finished them. So he's been very impressive."

Ziegler underwent microfracture surgery last September on his left knee and has been able to perform well despite having a limited spring training.

"I've felt all right," he said. "I feel like they've done a pretty good job of managing my workload knowing that I'm not 100 percent. I probably won't be all season, but it's not a matter of managing pain. It's more a matter of, do I have the strength to hold up? I'm still doing my rehab, still working as hard as I can, trying to be out there as often as they want me."
