(4/9/13) The Padres signed first baseman Brandon Allen to a minor-league contract Tuesday, according to MLB.com. Allen was released by the Rangers April 1.
Allen's major-league slash line in 116 games is .203/.290/.375/.665.

(3/31/13) After failing to secure a spot on the opening day roster, first baseman Brandon Allen was released by the Rangers on Sunday. Allen, who joined Texas on a minor-league deal in the offseason, was one of the team's first roster cuts this spring after hitting just .194 in Cactus League play.

Rays activate Keppinger, put Allen on DL
The Tampa Bay Rays have activated infielder Jeff Keppinger from the restricted list and put first baseman-outfielder Brandon Allen on the 15-day disabled list because of a strained right quadriceps.

It's still hard to believe that Albert Pujols didn't hit his first 2012 home run until Sunday. It's still hard to believe that 273 other major leaguers hit a home run this year before Albert. Some of them aren't even major leaguers anymore.

The Lineup: Pinch-hitters come through, closers don't
The Rays' Brandon Allen hit a pinch-hit walk-off homer for the Rays, while San Diego's Mark Kotsay hit a pinch-hit double in the eighth inning to top the Nationals. Meanwhile, closers Heath Bell of the Marlins and Sean Marshall of the Reds blew leads in losses.
