Rays RHP Kevin Jepsen sees 'friendly competition' for closer role

by Igor Mello | CBSSports.com
(2/24/15) Rays right-hander Kevin Jepsen told reporters that it'll be a "friendly competition" between his bullpen-mates for the closer role. With Jake McGee not set to return from elbow surgery at least until May, Jepsen could be in competition with last year's closer, Grant Balfour.

"I think it's a friendly competition," Jepsen said. "I think it's always a good thing when you have competition amongst players going into the season. [It] keeps everybody hungry. A lot of times during Spring Training, you're just getting your work in. But anytime there's a chance to move up or be in a different role than you're used to, it brings out some good competition and only makes you better."

Rays, Kevin Jepsen agree to one-year, $3.025 million deal

by Igor Mello | CBSSports.com
(1/16/15) The Rays and right-hander Kevin Jepsen have avoided arbitration with a one-year, $3.025 million contract, according to the Tampa Bay Times on Friday.

Jepsen was traded from the Angels to the Rays in December. He went 13-18 with a 3.94 ERA over seven seasons for the Angels. He had a career-high 75 strikeouts in 65 innings in 2014, while posting a career-low 2.63 ERA.

Rays trade Matt Joyce to Angels in exchange for Kevin Jepsen

by Michael Hurcomb | CBSSports.com
(12/16/14) The Rays traded outfielder Matt Joyce to the Angels on Tuesday in exchange for reliever Kevin Jepsen.

"Matt was an important part of this team for the last six seasons. We appreciate his many contributions to the Rays on the field, and the professionalism he brought to the ballpark," Rays vice president of baseball operations Erik Neander said. “We’re excited about the experience Kevin brings to the bullpen, and his ability to pitch in key moments of the game."

Joyce, who was an All-Star in 2011, spent six of his seven seasons in the majors with Tampa Bay. He heads to Los Angeles with a .250/.342/.441/.783 slash line in 725 career games. Joyce has a .104 average, one home run and seven RBI in 19 games at Angel Stadium.

Jepsen is 13-18 with a 3.94 ERA over seven seasons for the Angels. He had a career-high 75 strikeouts in 65 innings in 2014, while posting a career-low 2.63 ERA.

Report: Angels' Richards, Freese expected to be tendered offers

by Michael Hurcomb | CBSSports.com
(12/1/14) The Angels are expected to tender a contract offer to third baseman David Freese by Tuesday's deadline, according to the Los Angeles Times. Freese is expected to make $6.3 million in arbitration.

However, the team is not expected to tender an offer to infielder Gordon Beckham. The team would like to have Beckham back on the roster next season, but not for the $5 million he is projected to make in his third year of arbitration.

The Angels are also expected to tender offers to Garrett Richards, Kevin Jepsen, Hector Santiago, Fernando Salas and Collin Cowgill.

Kevin Jepsen picks up a save Friday

by Chris Cwik | CBSSports.com
(9/6/14) Angels reliever Kevin Jepsen picked up the save Friday against the Twins.

Jepsen entered with a one-run lead, and managed to shut the door. He pitched a perfect inning, inducing three groundouts. It was Jepsen's second save of the season. He entered the game after Huston Street blew a save chance the previous inning.
