Cash speaks glowingly of Rays reliever Jepsen despite slip-up

by Marty Gitlin | CBSSports.com
(4/18/15) One bad moment for Rays reliever Kevin Jepsen wasn't about to weaken the confidence Kevin Cash has in him.

Jepsen has been pitching well, but he allowed a game-winning single Friday to torrid Yankees designated hitter Alex Rodriguez. That made Rodriguez 1-for-11 lifetime aganst Jepsen.

"We had a lot of confidence in him before (he came to Tampa Bay in a trade for Matt Joyce last December)," Cash told the Tampa Tribune. "But he's added to it now. ... The season he had last year and just watching him over the years, it seemed like for a while he was the guy that had the filthy stuff but didn't always put it together. But then last year everything clicked for him, and I thought he very much backed it up, first in spring training and (through) every outing he's had (since)."

Jepsen owns a 1.50 ERA in six appearances this season.

Rays' Kevin Jepsen saves Steve Geltz's win

by Shawn Krest | CBSSports.com
(4/14/15) Kevin Jepsen earned his first save of the year, pitching a perfect ninth inning in the Rays' win on Tuesday.

Jepsen's one-two-three inning made a winner of reliever Steve Geltz , who retired all four batters he faced in the sixth and seventh innings to earn his first career win.

Rays' Cash changes course, plans to take closer-by-committee approach

by Michael Hurcomb | CBSSports.com
(3/30/15) A day after indicating Brad Boxberger would be the team's closer while Jake McGee is sidelined with an elbow injury, Rays manager Kevin Cash said Monday he is not going to name a closer, per the Tampa Bay Times. Cash added they will use several relievers in save situations.

"There's going to be guys that we'll lean on to pitch in those leveraged situations," Cash said, per MLB.com. "But it just doesn't make sense to come out and name a closer when the game could be on the line in the seventh or eighth inning."

Cash added they will revisit the closer situation once McGee comes off the disabled list. McGee is expected to miss the first month of the season.

Along with Boxberger, Grant Balfour, Kevin Jepsen and Ernesto Frieri could all be used in save situations.

"We're comfortable with all of our bullpen options," Cash said. "I don't see us leaning toward anybody just waiting to pitch the ninth inning."

Rays' Cash plans to use Kevin Jepsen in high-leverage situations

by Michael Hurcomb | CBSSports.com
(3/25/15) Rays manager Kevin Cash said reliever Kevin Jepsen will be used in "very significant leveraged roles" in 2015, per MLB.com.

"As for specific innings, we don't have that," Cash said. "But as far as plenty of game-on-the-line, high-leveraged situations."

Cash added Jepsen, who was acquired in an offseason trade with the Angels, has been as good as advertised. The right-hander has a 1.80 ERA through five relief appearances this spring.

"Came in with pretty dominant stuff," Cash said. "His innings, him and [Brad Boxberger's], they've had really clean innings. They've done a nice job. Quiet. Which is nice. No hiccups or anything like that.

"Fastball's been good. [Velocity] command and his breaking ball, that's the one pitch you really notice from the side. That thing just drops off the table when he snaps it off. So I'm excited that we have him and the roles that we'll use him in during the season."

Rays RHP Kevin Jepsen sees 'friendly competition' for closer role

by Igor Mello | CBSSports.com
(2/24/15) Rays right-hander Kevin Jepsen told reporters that it'll be a "friendly competition" between his bullpen-mates for the closer role. With Jake McGee not set to return from elbow surgery at least until May, Jepsen could be in competition with last year's closer, Grant Balfour.

"I think it's a friendly competition," Jepsen said. "I think it's always a good thing when you have competition amongst players going into the season. [It] keeps everybody hungry. A lot of times during Spring Training, you're just getting your work in. But anytime there's a chance to move up or be in a different role than you're used to, it brings out some good competition and only makes you better."
