| Max Scherzer bounces back vs. Indians |
by Igor Mello | CBSSports.com (5/22/13) Tigers starter Max Scherzer, who allowed five runs his last time out, bounced back with a flawless performance as he struck out seven and picked up his sixth win of the season Tuesday night against the Indians.
Scherzer surrendered a sacrifice fly in the first inning for his only damage of the night. He pitched seven scoreless innings after allowing a run in the opening frame. The right-hander permitted one run and allowed two hits over eight innings of work. He struck out seven of the last 12 batters faced in a 5-1 win.
"I definitely had the adrenaline going in that situation," Scherzer said. "You know that's your last inning and you throw the ball as hard as you can."
Scherzer has gone eight innings strong in three of his last four starts. He will make his next start Sunday at home against the Twins. He is 4-0 with a 5.85 ERA in five starts at home.

| Max Scherzer can't avoid long ball |
by Jeff Lippman | CBSSports.com (5/15/13) Tigers starter Max Scherzer struck out seven batters over seven innings Wednesday afternoon against the Astros. However, Houston managed to get to him via the long ball.
Scherzer surrendered a solo homer to Carlos Corporan in the second inning and J.D. Martinez hit the big blast off him in the fourth for a three-run shot. Detroit tied the score 5-5 in the sixth and it wasn't untied again until Houston scored twice in the top of the ninth.
Scherzer, who took a no-decision, gave up five runs on five hits and three walks over his seven innings and 101 pitches. His ERA is now at 3.98 and his record remains unblemished at 5-0. The 28-year-old has allowed nine runs over his last two outings spanning 15 innings, but still has 14 Ks over that stretch.
With 68 Ks over 54 1/3 innings, Scherzer is second in the American League in strikeouts. He'll look to keep missing bats when he next takes the mound Tuesday at Cleveland.

| Max Scherzer Ks eight in blowout win |
by Ed Gauna | CBSSports.com (5/4/13) Tigers starter Max Scherzer saw more than enough run support in his outing against the Astros Saturday night. He allowed a run on three hits over eight innings of a 17-2 win.
The right-hander faced the minimum over his first five innings and surrendered a solo homer to Carlos Corporan in the seventh. He threw 74 of his 105 pitches for strikes and lowered his ERA to 3.43.
Scherzer (4-0) also struck out eight and walked two. He has struck out 54 in 39 1/3 innings pitched.
His next start is Saturday against the Indians.

| Max Scherzer mows down 10 in win |
by Jeff Lippman | CBSSports.com (4/29/13) Tigers starter Max Scherzer struck out 10 batters over 7 1/3 innings Monday as he defeated the Minnesota Twins, 4-3.
Scherzer didn't get the lead until Prince Fielder's three-run homer in the sixth inning. The Tigers held on to help the starter improve to 3-0.
The Detroit strikeout artist threw 114 pitches with three earned runs on six hits and no walks over 7 1/3 innings. He gave up a solo homer to Josh Willingham in the first inning and his ERA is 4.02.
Scherzer, 28, rebounded from his last turn when he allowed five earned runs over five innings against the Royals. That said, he won that outing as well. Scherzer has 46 Ks over 31 1/3 innings and that puts him among the American League's best. He will make his next scheduled start Saturday at Houston.

| After the first two months of Max Scherzer's 2012 season, it appeared that he might become a lifetime member of the Pitchers Who Allow Too Many Home Runs Club. Though his high strikeout totals continued to tantalize Fantasy owners, he caused more harm than good by yielding 13 homers over his first 64 1/3 innings. In May, Scherzer made some adjustments to his delivery, and by June, Scherzer was turning his season around dramatically. He cut back on his home runs and walks and dropped more than two runs off his ERA, and by the second half, Scherzer had transformed from a standard mixed league liability to a must-start pitcher. If he can sustain the improvement, Scherzer could serve as an ace for your Fantasy rotation, but it's safer to treat him as a top 25 starter on Draft Day. (Updated 12/4/12) |
