Fantasy Analysis
Scherzer won a career-high 15 games in 2011 for Detroit, while pitching at least 195 innings for a second straight season. Scherzer is still not unhittable as his 4.43 ERA and 1.35 WHIP from 2011 can attest, but Scherzer is proving to be a reliable arm and could be close to putting it all together. Consider Scherzer a top 50 Fantasy SP on Draft Day, worth a mid-round selection. (Updated 01/17/2012).

For all of his talent, Max Scherzer put together one head-scratcher of a season in 2011. Yeah, he won a career-high 15 games, but his performance was nothing short of disappointing otherwise. After an unexpected trip to the minors in 2010 appeared to have straightened him out, causing him to post a 2.46 ERA with more than a strikeout per inning over his final 23 starts, he was inconsistent from start to finish in 2011, posting a career-worst 4.43 ERA overall. So did his control problems of the past come back to bite him again? No, he issued a career-low 2.6 walks per nine innings. Was he battling some unreported injury? Not if his fastball velocity has anything to say about it. What about bad luck? It's the BABIP, right? Well, his .314 mark was a career worst, but he's usually in the .300 range. By seemingly every indication, Scherzer was the same pitcher as always last year, which means his mediocre numbers are probably something he can correct. He still has excellent strikeout potential and a solid supporting cast, so you wouldn't want to let him slip beyond the top 50 starting pitchers on Draft Day. (Updated 1/5/12)
