Nationals' Max Scherzer flirts with another no-no, gets win on Friday

by Jason Lempert | Staff Writer
(6/26/15) Coming off of his first-career no-hitter in his last start, Nationals right-hander Max Scherzer looked like he was heading towards another hitless outing on Friday.

Scherzer was perfect for 5 1/3 innings against the Phillies, until Freddy Galvis broke up the bid with a one-out double in the sixth. Before that two-bagger, Scherzer had gone 16 1/3 hitless innings, spanning three starts.

Ultimately, Scherzer wound up going six innings, giving up two runs on five hits on Friday. He struck out seven without walking a batter, though he did give up a solo home run to Ben Revere in the eighth inning.

But Scherzer was still able to pick up his ninth win of the season, as the Nationals topped the Phillies 5-2.

"I was pounding the zone. Again, another outing with no walks. That's what you pride yourself on -- just attacking the zone," Scherzer said, per MLB.com. "The defense made some good plays. I was [on the same page with] Willie [Ramos]."

Nationals SP Max Scherzer nails down no-no after perfecto ruined

by Marty Gitlin | CBSSports.com
(6/20/15) One measly hit-by-pitch destroyed a perfect game for sizzling Nationals starter Max Scherzer on Saturday. Nothing could destroy his first no-hitter.

The Pirates certainly couldn't as they flailed helplessly at his offerings. Scherzer was on the verge of a perfect game when Jose Tabata lowered his elbow into a pitch and let it plunk him. A flyout off the bat of Josh Harrison clinched the no-no.

It also marked an incredible two-start blitz for Scherzer, who has allowed one hit and fanned 26 with one walk in 18 innings over that period.

Scherzer did not start out on fire in terms of strikeouts, but he picked up steam to fan two in the third, fourth, sixth and seventh innings. He threw just 92 pitches through eight, which allowed him not only to shoot for the perfect game, but manage the third complete game of his major league career.

After throwing a ridiculous 82 of 106 pitches for strikes, Scherzer will try to remain on a roll in his next start. He has one heck of a chance - it's against lowly Philadelphia.

Nationals P Max Scherzer has start pushed back to Saturday

by Jason Butt | CBSSports.com
(6/18/15) Nationals pitcher Max Scherzer will have his start moved back a day and go Saturday against the Pirates, according to The Washington Post's Chelsea Janes.

Scherzer was originally projected to start Friday. Instead, the Nationals will go with Joe Ross Friday and move Gio Gonzalez to Sunday.

Scherzer is coming off his best start of the season in which he pitched a complete-game shutout against the Brewers on June 14.

Nationals Max Scherzer tosses shutout in Sunday's game

by Sean d'Oliveira | CBSSports.com
(6/14/15) Nationals pitcher Max Scherzer had a career game during Sunday's win over the Brewers. Scherzer (7-5) tossed a complete game shutout to defeat the Brewers 4-0.

It was Scherzer's second career complete game and second career shutout. He also struck out a career-high 16 batters during the outing, which also set a franchise record for the Nationals. He only walked one during the start.

"I thought he was in complete control from the first pitch," Nationals manager Matt Williams said, per MLB.com. "They're an aggressive swinging club that he was able to get ahead on and finish. Really nice performance."

Sunday's start was Scherzer's first quality outing in his last two starts. His next expected start is scheduled for Friday against the Pirates.

Nationals P Max Scherzer gives up 4 runs in loss to Yankees

by Jason Butt | CBSSports.com
(6/9/15) Nationals pitcher Max Scherzer had his second consecutive sub-par performance in Tuesday night's 6-1 loss to the Yankees.

Scherzer allowed four earned runs for the second consecutive game and also surrendered a home run. He gave up eight hits and a walk but did strike out seven batters. Scherzer now has a 2.13 ERA, marking the first time he's gone over 2.00 this year.

Scherzer's next start is projected for Sunday against the Brewers.
