Nationals SP Max Scherzer continues August struggles

by Marty Gitlin | CBSSports.com
(8/20/15) Nationals starter Max Scherzer performed better Thursday in Colorado than he has in recent outings, but the guy who dominated hitters into early July is still missing.

Scherzer bounced back from a miserable outing Friday to hold the Rockies to three runs on eight hits in six innings. He walked three and whiffed seven in taking a loss that lowered his record to 11-10. He has dropped five of his last seven decisions.

The right-hander blanked Colorado through four on two hits, but two singles and Jose Reyes double ended the shutout in the fifth and a single by pitcher Yohan Flande added another run in the sixth. He departed after allowing a single to start the seventh. That run crossed the plate and resulted in his defeat.

Scherzer has been awful in August, during which he has given up 16 runs in 21 innings.

Nationals SP Max Scherzer allows six runs, picks up loss

by Ruben Palacios | Staff Writer
(8/15/15) Nationals starting pitcher Max Scherzer suffered one of his worst starts of the season on Friday against the Giants.

Scherzer lasted just three innings after allowing six runs on seven hits. He allowed two home runs while only striking out three batters.

"I get it. I stunk. There is no getting around that," Scherzer said, per MLB.com. "... My arm slot is a little low right now. It causes my fastball to flatten out. When you think about the results tonight, a lot of damage was done against the fastball.

"It's going to take some work. You have to create a good habit with it. I have to throw the ball 10,000 times to a wall just to make sure I have this good habit. This isn't a huge fix, but it's a time-consuming fix."

With the loss, Scherzer dropped to 11-9 on the season.

Nationals SP Max Scherzer strikes out 10 in no-decision

by Ruben Palacios | Staff Writer
(8/9/15) Nationals starting pitcher Max Scherzer recorded his seventh double-digit strikeout game of the season on Sunday against the Rockies.

Scherzer struck out 10 batters in six solid innings of work. He allowed four runs on eight hits and one walk. Scherzer also tied a season-low with three home runs allowed.

With the no-decision, Scherzer remains at 11-8 on the season. He has a 2.44 ERA with 191 strikeouts and 23 walks in 162 innings this season.

Nationals' Max Scherzer takes no-decision against Arizona

by Shawn Krest | CBSSports.com
(8/4/15) Nationals pitcher Max Scherzer allowed three runs in six innings and left for a pinch hitter with the score tied.

Scherzer took a no-decision for the second time in three starts. He allowed four hits and walked a season-high three for the second straight game, striking out nine.

Nationals SP Max Scherzer blanks Marlins through seven innings

by Jason Lempert | Staff Writer
(7/30/15) Nationals ace Max Scherzer was outstanding against the Marlins on Thursday, as he fired seven shutout innings in the 1-0 victory. Scherzer allowed three hits and three walks while striking out six. He threw 109 pitches, as he pretty much dominated the Marlins all afternoon.

Scherzer improved to 11-8 and lowered his ERA to 2.22. He did a good job of limiting the Marlins' chances, as he allowed just six baserunners in the outing.

It has been a rollercoaster month for the former Cy Young award winner. Scherzer allowed five runs in two of his six July starts and two or fewer in the other four starts. Overall, he went 2-3 with a 3.41 ERA and a 42:18 K:BB ratio in the month of July.
