Preseason Outlook

Valbuena demonstrated some power potential in the minors, but he didn't get a chance to show it at the major-league level until he joined the Indians, taking over as the everyday second baseman following the midseason trade of Mark DeRosa and hitting 10 homers in 368 at-bats. He became more consistent as his at-bats became more consistent, hitting .281 from July on. At age 24, he still has some work to do if he hopes to hold down an everyday job in the majors, specifically with his plate discipline, but at least he showed he has the ability. He's a sleeper pick better left for AL-only leagues on Draft Day, but don't be surprised if he makes an impact in mixed leagues before season's end. (Updated 1/5/10)
