|Luis Valbuena to miss next two days with flu |
|by Chris Cwik | CBSSports.com|
(8/15/14) Cubs infielder Luis Valbuena will miss the next two games due to the flu, according to MLB.com.
Valbuena was not in the team's starting lineup Friday, and is not expected to play Saturday. He's hitting .233/.320/.408 over 343 at-bats.
|For two glorious months last year, Luis Valbuena was one of the most productive third basemen in the NL in terms of OPS. Fantasy owners didn't know it because he sat against left-handed pitchers, but with a high walk rate and decent pop, he was on the verge of becoming something. But then, reality set in. Over the final four months of 2013, Valbuena hit .189 with a .631 OPS, reducing himself to waiver fodder even in NL-only leagues. An oblique injury in August allowed Donnie Murphy into the mix, and even though he eventually settled in as Valbuena's platoon partner, he was the more productive of the two to close 2013. At age 28, Valbuena may not get any better from here. Right now, his primary competition is Murphy, but at some point this season, the Cubs could turn to Mike Olt, Kris Bryant or Javier Baez at third base. Even in NL-only leagues, you wouldn't want to invest too heavily in Valbuena.
