| Nick Blackburn resumes throwing |

(4/9/13) Twins pitcher Nick Blackburn, who is rehabbing from elbow and forearm surgery, has resumed playing catch Tuesday, according to The Star Tribune. He is expected to be assigned to Triple-A Rochester once he is back to full strength.

(1/14/13) The Star Tribune reports Twins starting pitcher Nick Blackburn, who underwent elbow surgery in October, had surgery last week on his forearm after having continued problems following his first surgery. Blackburn is expected to miss 4-6 weeks and won't be ready for the start of spring training.

| When the Twins turned to Nick Blackburn's extreme pitch-to-contact approach in past years, they got some decent results out of it. But in 2012, they got burned. The 31-year-old right-hander allowed fewer than four earned runs in only five of his 19 starts, compiling a 7.39 ERA that was actually an improvement from his 8.10 mark after 13 starts. The Twins removed him from the starting rotation at that point, which is saying something considering their best alternatives were some guys named Cole De Vries, Samuel Deduno and P.J. Walters. Blackburn is still in the organization, but the Twins won't be so quick to settle for his career hit rate of 11.0 per nine innings after the way it came back to bite them last year. Considering Blackburn was good for no better than a 4.00 ERA even at his "best," you're free to pass on him in AL-only leagues. (Updated 1/8/13) |
