Marquis hits designated trail: Minnesota starting pitcher Jason Marquis was designated for assignment on Tuesday, ending a brief rocky tenure with the Twins. Marquis (2-4) was reportedly on the way out after surrendering a season-high eight runs in less than two innings during a loss at Milwaukee on Sunday. It was his fourth consecutive loss after starting the season 2-0 and raised his ERA to 8.47. "We gave him every opportunity. It just wasnt working out," general manager Terry Ryan said. The Twins promoted starting pitcher Cole DeVries from Triple-A Rochester to take his place in the rotation. (Updated 05/22/2012)

Fantasy Analysis
After 12 seasons in the National League, Marquis received a rude welcome from the American League's deeper offenses and permitted nearly a run per inning in seven starts. The right-hander struggled to locate his pitches and recorded 14 walks to just 12 strikeouts over 34 innings. When he did find the strike zone, hitters took advantage and belted nine homers and carried a .371 batting average off of him. Marquis yielded 11 homers in 23 starts last year. He should generate some interest from other teams, but is not a reliable Fantasy option for now. (Updated 05/22/2012).

The Red Sox set an odd record on Saturday, as Jarrod Saltalamacchia and Will Middlebrooks both homered to set a new record for most total number of letters by teammates to homer in the same game. Meanwhile, Nationals pitcher Ross Detwiler may be looking over his shoulder in D.C.
05/18/2012 14:01 Some American League pitchers can actually hit
Even though some American League pitchers look as if they don't know which end of the bat to hold, there are some pitchers in the AL that look comfortable in the batter's box even after losing the safety of the DH.
Jason Marquis has always been the master of winning with ugly peripherals, and he did it again in 2011. His 8-5 record (despite a 1.42 WHIP) in 20 starts for the Nationals earned him a shot at a postseason run with his trade to the Diamondbacks last July. But he lasted only three starts before breaking his right fibula on Aug. 14, ending his season. Now, he's back to the bottom of the barrel, signing with the Twins this offseason to fill the last spot in their starting rotation. It'll be Marquis' first foray into AL play, and given the 33-year-old's hittability, you'd think he'd struggle to adapt to the more hitter-friendly league. Then again, he has been defying the odds for the better part of 12 seasons now. You wouldn't want to draft a low-end hurler like Marquis outside of AL-only leagues, but don't be surprised if he overachieves enough to earn some looks off the waiver wire at some point during the season.
