Preseason Outlook

Pena managed to tie Mark Teixeira for the AL home run title even though he missed the final month with two broken fingers in his left hand, which tells you something about his power potential. Yup, over the last three years, the 31-year-old slugger has averaged 38.9 home runs and 107.7 RBI. Unfortunately, he has hit only .252 during that stretch, his batting average dropping every year to the point it settled at a Paul Bako-like .227 last year. Since taking over as the Rays' everyday first baseman, Pena has emerged as another Adam Dunn -- a player who rarely makes contact but homers just about every time he does and who somehow walks enough to make up for his low batting average. No doubt, that kind of player has value in Fantasy, just as he does in real life, but drafting Pena comes with a few prerequisites in Fantasy, especially in Rotisserie leagues. Still, you won't find a cheaper 40 homers on Draft Day. If you need power and Pena slips to the middle rounds, he's your guy. (Updated 12/9/09)
