Preseason Outlook

For the third straight year, Soriano missed significant time due to injury -- this time to his knee, costing him the final month of the season. And for the third straight year, Soriano's numbers took a step back -- this time a major one, costing him 40 points off his batting average and 150 points off his OPS. The decline seems fitting for a player that miraculously hit .290 year after year despite a horrendous 4-to-1 strikeout-to-walk ratio. When free-swinging sluggers -- the kind who succeed in spite of their peripherals -- begin to fade, they fade fast. Think Sammy Sosa. Think Miguel Tejada. Has Soriano had his last 25-30 homer season? Probably not, but you can no longer count on him for 20 steals, a mark he hasn't reached since 2007, and that batting average only has so much room to improve at age 34, especially with that strikeout-to-walk rate. Soriano is still worth drafting as your second outfielder, but his days as a stud are likely over. Think of him as this year's Vladimir Guerrero. (Updated 1/13/10)
