Inge's hopes of starting over : MLive.com reported that Tigers first baseman Miguel Cabrera confirmed that he will shift to third base in 2012. That means infielder Brandon Inge and Don Kelly will have an even more limited role this season. Inge had said he wanted to earn the starting job at third base this spring, but now it seems very unlikely that will happen. (Updated 01/24/2012)

Fantasy Analysis
Inge was batting .177 with one home run and 17 RBI when the Tigers designated him for assignment in late July. He then accepted his demotion to Triple-A Toledo. Inge did return to the Tigers and finished the year batting .197 with 23 RBI. There is a chance Miggy is the designated hitter a good chunk of the time, giving Inge some starts at third, but he won't win the job outright. For that reason Inge's already low Fantasy value has gotten even lower. Unless he gets traded to a team where he can start, Inge will be nothing more than a low-end reserve option in AL-only formats this year. (Updated 01/24/2012).
When the Tigers acquired Prince Fielder from Milwaukee to man first base during the 2012 season, they may have inadvertantly ended any chance of significant playing time for Brandon Inge. Fielder's presence likely moves Miguel Cabrera to third base, subsequently making Inge nothing more than a backup to Cabrera and possibly as a DH. Inge has major league experience at catcher, 3B, DH and all three outfield positions, but this year's Detroit squad has plenty of pieces to keep him out of the lineup. Plus, the 34-year-old Inge, who turns 35 in May, hit just .197 last year over just 269 at-bats. His three homers and 23 RBI were his lowest totals since playing 79 games in 2001 in his first season in the majors. Inge is simply no longer relevant in most Fantasy formats. He has low-end value in AL-only leagues, at best, and should not be drafted. (Updated 2/8/12)
