| Cody Ransom preparing for backup 1B duties |
by Ed Gauna | CBSSports.com (5/7/13) Cubs infielder Cody Cody Ransom has been working out at first base to serve as a backup to starter Anthony Rizzo, MLB.com reports.
Ransom has played only third base thus far for Chicago and is batting .350 (7 for 20) with three homers and four RBI.
"You never know if [Ransom] will get over there one day," manager Dale Sveum said. "Hopefully not. Especially the way Rizzo is swinging against left-handed pitching. It’s a 'just in case' thing."

| Cody Ransom notable for Cubs |
by Bill Passonno | CBSSports.com (5/4/13) Cubs third baseman Cody Ransom went 0 for 3 with two strikeouts hitting out of the No. 2 spot in the lineup during Chicago's 6-4 loss to Cincinnati Saturday. Since getting a hit in his first five games, Ransom has gone 0 for 6 with two walks over his past three outings (two starts).
Despite the cold stretch, Ransom is expected to remain in a platoon at third base with Luis Valbuena following Ian Stewart's demotion to Triple-A Iowa Friday. Valbuena replaced Ransom as a pinch hitter in the eighth inning Saturday.
"He's going to strike out a lot against right-handed pitching, but he's always been very dependable in the field at every position, has an accurate arm," manager Dale Sveum said about Ransom. "He's a guy who's a no-panic kind of defensive player. We knew what we were getting and obviously, he's done a really nice job at the plate."

| Cody Ransom hits third home run |
by Jack Moore | CBSSports.com (5/1/13) Cubs infielder Cody Ransom hit a pinch-hit home run Tuesday against San Diego, his third of the year.
Ransom has now homered thrice in just 10 games, five played as a member of the Padres and five more as a member of the Cubs. Power has always been the strongest part of Ransom's game -- strikeouts have limited his career batting average to .227, but he owns a solid .408 slugging percentage.
