Punto had a huge game offensively but the Red Sox still were swept by the Tigers after an extra-inning affair. Punto went 3 for 6 from the top spot of the order with three RBI in the game. Punto hit a sacrifice fly for an RBI in the third inning and added an RBI on an infield single in the ninth and a single to left in the 11th for Boston. Fantasy Analysis
Punto was making his first start of the season on Sunday for the Red Sox. He looked good but since he played in just one of the three games in the series with Detroit, we're assuming he's not going to see regular at-bats as long as Kevin Youkilis and Mike Aviles are healthy. Nick Punto did a solid job off the bench for the Cardinals last season and could have an improved role in 2012. After batting .278 with one homer and 20 RBI in 63 games a year ago, he signed with the Red Sox in the offseason and could end up seeing time at shortstop with Jed Lowrie and Marco Scutaro no longer in Boston. The 34-year-old has been a utility infielder for much of his career, but if he can beat out Mike Aviles -- or at least split time with him in 2012 -- it will go a long way for his value in Fantasy. The career .249 hitter would benefit from everyday at-bats in a potent lineup, but he is shaping up to be more of a low-end option in AL-only formats on Draft Day. (Updated 2/14/12)
