| Sveum chooses closer based on matchup |
by Ed Gauna | CBSSports.com (4/29/13) Cubs manager Dale Sveum told MLB.com on Monday that he does not tell his relievers beforehand who will serve as closer before each game. He added that he goes by best the matchup to decide who to throw in the ninth inning.
“It’s been working,” Sveum said Monday. “I’m not going to say it’s a fix-all and that you don’t want to name a closer. You definitely don’t want to rock the boat when things are going good in the back of the bullpen when everybody is healthy and ready to go that night. It could be one of four guys. It depends on the matchups.”
Carlos Marmol, Kevin Gregg, Shawn Camp and James Russell are the "four guys" Sveum was referring to.

| Health not to blame for Shawn Camp's slow start |
by R.J. White | CBSSports.com (4/18/13) Cubs reliever Shawn Camp led the league in games pitched in 2012, but he insists that health isn't to blame for his slow start in 2013.
"Health-wise I'm fine," Camp told ESPNChicago.com. "I wouldn't be out there if I wasn't healthy."
Camp has surrendered eight earned runs on 11 hits and two walks in 4 2/3 innings this season for a 15.43 ERA and 2.79 WHIP.

| Shawn Camp can't close out San Francisco |
by Igor Mello | CBSSports.com (4/14/13) Cubs relief pitcher Shawn Camp could not hang on to a late lead, as he blew his first save and suffered his first loss of the season Sunday afternoon against the Giants.
Camp (0-1) entered the game in the ninth inning with a one-run advantage. He served up the game-tying home run to Hunter Pence before surrendering three more runs in the 10th inning. He was charged with four runs on five hits over 1 2/3 innings in a 10-7 defeat. The right-hander struck out two and did not issue a walk as he ERA grew to 12.46 after his abysmal outing.

| Shawn Camp could be closer |
by Bill Passonno | CBSSports.com (4/13/13) With pitcher Kyuji Fujikawa on the disabled list with a forearm injury, Cubs manager Dale Sveum said he will use a closer-by-committee approach, leaning primarily on Shawn Camp and James Russell. Displaced closer Carlos Marmol is not expected to be involved.
"It'll probably come down to matchups and what happened earlier in the game," Sveum told MLB.com on Saturday.
Camp has been used in save situations sporadically throughout his career and had two saves with the Cubs last season. The right-hander has completed a full inning just once in four appearances this year.

| Shawn Camp could be closer option for Cubs |
by R.J. White | CBSSports.com (4/6/13) Cubs manager Dale Sveum suggested that relief pitcher Shawn Camp could be an option for the closer role as the team discusses removing Carlos Marmol , according to MLB.com. Camp has recorded three outs over two appearances this season without allowing a run.

Pirates spoil Garza's strong return from DL, down Cubs
Travis Snider hit a pinch-hit grand slam during a five-run sixth and the Pittsburgh Pirates spoiled a strong return to the mound for Matt Garza with a 5-4 win over the Chicago Cubs on Tuesday night.
|
| Shawn Camp had such a successful first campaign in Chicago that the Cubs gave him another one-year deal in the offseason and he is expected to serve as the setup man again in 2013. He posted a 3.59 ERA while appearing in a career-high 80 games and struck out 54 in 77 2/3 innings pitched. The right-hander went 2 for 6 in save chances while recording 18 holds. Owners know Carlos Marmol is not the most reliable closer in the majors, so there is a good chance Camp will see a handful of save opportunities again this season. Given his role, however, leave the 37-year-old for the deepest of NL-only formats that use middle men on Draft Day. (Updated 12/11/12) |
