Preseason Outlook

You could look at Rollins' 2009 season two ways. On the one hand, the 31-year-old suffered his biggest decline yet, continuing the trend that began with his disappointing 2008 by posting a .250 batting average, his lowest since 2002, and a .719 OPS, his lowest since 2003. On the other hand, he finished with 21 home runs, 31 stolen bases and 100 runs scored, which is still far and away better than what most shortstops can offer. Most of his troubles came in the first half, when he hit .229 with seven home runs. He rebounded in the second half, so maybe all this talk of a decline is premature. You can't expect Rollins to go 30-30 like he did in his 2007 MVP season, and you probably shouldn't count on him for much in the way of batting average, but his combination of power and speed in a loaded Phillies lineup still makes him a force in Fantasy, especially at a weak position like shortstop. Expect to draft him in the early rounds, but after the elite options like Hanley Ramirez and Troy Tulowitzki have gone off the board. (Updated 1/5/10)
