| Jimmy Rollins knows this could be the last ride |
by Chris Towers | CBSSports.com (5/16/13) Shortstop Jimmy Rollins has won an MVP and made three All-Star appearances with the Phillies. With the team struggling amid a bloated payroll, he understands that this current incarnation of the team might not be around much longer, including himself.
"We've just got to make sure we do what we need to do before they blow it up," Rollins told MLB.com Thursday.
The Phillies are three games under .500 on the season, a poor showing for a roster that is being paid $159.6 million this season, and a far cry from the team that made five straight postseason appearances and won a World Series from 2007 and 2011. Still, Rollins said he isn't panicking.
"We're not going to panic," Rollins said. "That word isn't going to get into this clubhouse."
Rollins has two years and $22 million remaining on his contract after this season, and is batting just .255 with a career-low .686 on-base plus slugging percentage.

| Jimmy Rollins starting to put it together |
by Michael Hurcomb | CBSSports.com (5/15/13) Phillies shortstop Jimmy Rollins tied a season-high with three RBI Wednesday against the Indians. He finished 2 for 4 with his 12th double and one strikeout.
Rollins has hit safely in five straight games and seven of eight. He's batting .323 (11 for 34) with one home run, three doubles and seven RBI in that span.

| Jimmy Rollins having worrisome start |
by Joe Polito | CBSSports.com (5/14/13) After a sluggish start to 2013, Phillies shortstop Jimmy Rollins has been showing signs of improvement in his past few games. Last year when Rollins faced similar early season struggles, he succeeded in turning things around. But this year he might find rebounding a bit more difficult.
Our Nando Di Fino pointed out during Tuesday’s broadcast of Fantasy Baseball Today that Rollins’ production increase last year coincided with teammates Chase Utley and Ryan Howard’s return to the lineup. Al Melchior said he was worried about strikeouts affecting Rollins' power.

| Jimmy Rollins moved to No. 2 spot |
by Bill Passonno | CBSSports.com (5/12/13) For the first time since April 17, Phillies shortstop Jimmy Rollins did not start in the leadoff spot during Sunday's contest at Arizona. Rollins was bumped to the two-spot and replaced in the No. 1 position by Ben Revere despite recording six hits over his past four games.

| Jimmy Rollins bumps up batting average |
by Bill Passonno | CBSSports.com (5/12/13) Phillies shortstop Jimmy Rollins went 2 for 3 with a walk and two RBI during Philadelphia's 3-1 win at Arizona on Saturday night. Rollins, who also added a stolen base, ripped two singles to give him three multi-hit efforts in his past four games and move his batting average to .250 -- his highest mark since May 1.
"I usually have success when I get runners on, though not so much this year," he said. "Obviously, you adjust your swing because you've got to get a good swing first. Now that I'm starting to get there, the confidence comes that I can put on the same swing in any situation."

| If there is one common thread with the Phillies' offensive superstars (Jimmy Rollins, Chase Utley and Ryan Howard), it is this: we need to throw their batting average out the window, because there's no use in trying to predict if they're going to hit .280 or .250. Look, for instance, at Rollins: a career .270 hitter, his last three seasons have averages of .243, .268 and .250. But you never got Rollins for his average. In 2012, Rollins hit the most home runs (23) since his 2007 MVP campaign. And he continued his streak of stealing 30 bases in every season with 550 or more at-bats. While it's logical to think Rollins may slow down a bit with his speed and power as he enters 2013 at age 34, keep in mind Rollins had to essentially carry the team on his back while Utley (returned on June 27) and Howard (returned on July 6) were rehabbing injuries. From Howard's return forward -- in 75 games -- Rollins hit 15 home runs, scored 54 times and stole 16 bases. With the two big bats back in the mix, Rollins should equalize any age-related drop-off with a better lineup behind him. He will be drafted in the early rounds of most leagues. (Updated 12/7/12) |
