Preseason Outlook

An afterthought since joining the Dodgers, Pierre reaffirmed his value in 2009 when Manny Ramirez had to serve a 50-game suspension. Pierre took over as the team's starting left fielder on May 7 and hit .318 with 21 stolen bases before surrendering his job back to Ramirez on July 3. He went back to being a part-time starter and speedster off the bench after that, but teams around the league didn't forget about his performance as a fill-in for Ramirez. One of those teams, the White Sox, rescued Pierre from the Dodgers this offseason, presumably to make him their leadoff man. At age 32, he might not be a 65-steal guy anymore, but he could get back to the 40-50 steal range as an everyday player, which means he probably won't slip past the middle rounds in Rotisserie leagues. His on-base percentage is still discouraging for a leadoff man, but you can overlook it for all those steals and 90-plus runs scored. (Updated 1/19/10)
