|Ernesto Frieri away from team to be with family |
|by Chris Cwik | CBSSports.com|
(2/28/14) Angels pitcher Ernesto Frieri is away from the team to be with his family, according to MLB.com.
Frieri and his wife are expecting to have their second child shortly, so Frieri will miss a couple days. It should not impact whether he's ready for the regular season. Frieri posted a 3.80 ERA in 68 2/3 innings last year.

(1/17/14) The Angels and pitcher Ernesto Frieri have agreed to a one-year deal worth $3.8 million, the Orange County Register reports.
Frieri was eligible for arbitration for the first time this season, but the sides managed to work out a deal before the process played out. He went 2-4 with a 3.80 ERA, 1.24 WHIP, 98:30 K:BB ratio and 37 saves in 68 2/3 innings last season.
|Angels announce decisions prior to non-tender deadline |
|by Chris Towers | CBSSports.com|
(12/2/13) The Angels opted not to tender contracts to three players Monday, making them free agents. Pitchers Jerome Williams and Tommy Hanson, along with infielder Chris Nelson, will become free agents this offseason.
The Angels did tender contracts to five players, and will have a chance to negotiate deals for them prior to arbitration hearing. They are: infielders Mark Trumbo and David Freese, and pitchers Ernesto Frieri, Kevin Jepsen and Fernando Salas.
|Ernesto Frieri to return as Angels' closer |
|by Al Melchior | Data Analyst|
(11/24/13) Angels general manager Jerry Dipoto told MLB Network Radio that Ernesto Frieri will reprise his role as the team's closer next season.
Frieri recorded 37 of the bullpen's 41 saves in 2013, and he posted a 3.80 ERA while tied with Craig Kimbrel for the sixth-highest strikeout total (98) for a reliever in the major leagues.
|Ernesto Frieri picks up 37th save |
|by Jeff Lippman | CBSSports.com|
(9/25/13) Angels closer Ernesto Frieri earned his 37th save Wednesday afternoon against Oakland. Frieri struck out two batters in the ninth inning on 12 pitches.
Frieri gave up one hit in his only inning of work. He lowered his ERA to 3.59 on the season. The 28-year-old has gone 37 for 41 in save situations and has 96 strikeouts over 67 2/3 innings on the year.
|When Fantasy owners learned last offseason that the Angels had signed Ryan Madson to be their closer whenever he returned from Tommy John surgery, they were outraged. How could they take that job away from Ernesto Frieri, who had just dominated with a 2.32 ERA, 0.99 WHIP and 13.4 strikeouts per nine innings in 67 appearances? But then when they learned in early August that Madson wouldn't be returning at all, they were repulsed. That's because Frieri had just completed a seven-game stretch in which he blew two saves, took three losses and compiled a 23.14 ERA, briefly forcing manager Mike Scioscia to go closer by committee. Frieri recovered to earn 11 saves with a 1.66 ERA, 0.83 WHIP and 12.0 strikeouts per nine innings over his final 19 appearances, but so shaken was the Angels' confidence in him during that seven-game stretch that you have to assume he's no lock for the role to begin 2014. As dominant as he can be at times, his shaky control could be his undoing as a closer. Even if his strikeout ability gives him top-tier potential, you're better off targeting him as your second reliever on Draft Day.
