Preseason Outlook

Fukudome's sophomore season went about the same way his rookie season did. He looked like a world beater in April and May, batting .309 with five home runs, but quickly tired. He then had a brief resurgence after the All-Star break -- he actually did get a break this time -- but closed out the season as run down as ever, hitting .200 in September and October. The end result was a .259-11-54-79-6 line almost identical to the .257-10-58-79-12 line from his rookie year. You could excuse his midseason struggles in 2008 as part of his adjustment to the American game, but that reasoning doesn't fly for a second straight year. The soon-to-be 33-year-old just can't last over a full season. The Cubs have made him a part-time player anyway, sitting him against left-handers, which pretty much destroys his mixed-league appeal. His on-base percentage makes him useful during his hot stretches, but you can avoid him on Draft Day. (Updated 1/19/10)
