Chris Coghlan has fallen a long way since winning NL Rookie of the Year in 2009, disappointing Fantasy owners with poor offensive numbers and a wide assortment of injuries in the two years since. Last year, his season appeared doomed before it even began. He was already coming off knee surgery when he developed shoulder inflammation that sidelined him for much of spring training. Then, his knee began bothering him again in mid-June, forcing him to the DL, and just when he looked like he was ready to return, he hyperextended his right elbow, effectively ending his season. Lost in all the injuries was the fact that the Marlins had intended to demote him in June before putting him on the, indicating that they're about ready to turn the page on the 26-year-old. With the emergence of Emilio Bonifacio last season and the addition of Jose Reyes in the offseason, Coghlan has no place to play, which means he's confined to a bench role for now. He still has enough offensive potential to make a relevant Fantasy contribution, but without the opportunity, he's strictly an NL-only option. (Updated 1/25/12)
