| Jesus Montero officially optioned to minors |
by Michael Hurcomb | CBSSports.com (5/23/13) The Mariners officially optioned catcher Jesus Montero to Triple-A Tacoma Thursday. A corresponding move isn't expected to be made until Friday, but Seattle is expected to promote Tacoma backup catcher Jesus Sucre, as first reported by The News Tribune.

| Jesus Montero worth a hold in deep leagues |
by Nando Di Fino | Senior Fantasy Writer (5/23/13) In 101 at-bats prior to his Thursday demotion, Mariners catcher Jesus Montero hit .208 with three home runs and one double.
This was coming on the heels of an encouraging 2012 in which he hit .260 with 15 home runs and 20 doubles. And all of that came off a minor-league career which saw the 23-year-old hit .308, with four 17-plus home run campaigns over five seasons.
Montero can hit, but he has proven to be a pretty bad catcher. So he'll learn first base down on the farm, a process that may not take too long considering this is not a foreign idea to him. We know Montero can hit -- his 2013 line was doomed thanks to spotty playing time and repeated failures and stresses behind the plate. With the burden of having to call games and handle a staff now gone, Montero has been freed to simply take grounders and regain his offensive potential.
Granted, Montero doesn't even have a spot at DH or first base open for him once he does come around. But injuries (and slumps) can change things on a daily basis. If you absolutely need a replacement, we offered up some suggestions on Fantasy Baseball Today. I am holding Montero in 14-team-and-deeper Roto formats. I may even trade for him or scoop him off the discard pile in some leagues. Montero can hit, and it shouldn't be too long (mid-July?) until he pops back up with a far sunnier outlook.

| Report: Jesus Montero being demoted |
by Michael Hurcomb | CBSSports.com (5/23/13) The Mariners are expected to demote catcher Jesus Montero to Triple-A Tacoma Thursday and promote catcher Jesus Sucre from Tacoma to take his roster spot, according to The News Tribune. With prospect Mike Zunino at Tacoma, the News Tribune suggests Montero will see more playing time at DH and first base.
Montero is batting .208 with three home runs and nine RBI in 29 games. He hasn't started since Sunday, with Kelly Shoppach taking over behind the plate.

| Jesus Montero back behind plate |
by Jeff Lippman | CBSSports.com (5/19/13) Mariners manager Eric Wedge showed catcher Jesus Montero he has confidence in him as he gave him another start Sunday at Cleveland, the Seattle Times reports. Montero may have cost Seattle the game with a defensive lapse Saturday.
"He just came off the plate," Wedge said. "He just released too early. You’ve got to keep your foot planted. You’re not going to turn two on that, so you’ve just got to keep your foot planted on that."
The 23-year-old Montero continues to be more prized for his hitting than his fielding, but he has gone 7 for 34 (.206) in May with a homer and two RBI. He's struck out six times during the month. Montero is batting .206 on the season with three homers and nine RBI over 97 at-bats.

| Jesus Montero joins hit parade |
by R.J. White | CBSSports.com (5/15/13) Seven Mariners collected two hits in Wednesday's 12-2 shellacking of the Yankees, including catcher Jesus Montero, who went 2 for 5 to post his first multi-hit game of May. The performance raised Montero's line to .211/.258/.344 in 97 plate appearances.

| Jesus Montero showed some prolific power during his time in the minors and during his callup with the Yankees in 2011, but disappointed a bit in his first full season in the majors. He batted just .245 with eight home runs and 28 RBI in the first half before picking it up a bit after the All-Star break. He would end up batting .260 with 15 homers and 62 RBI in 135 games while splitting time behind the plate and at DH. His inconsistencies at the plate caused his ownership to drop as the season went on and his .386 slugging percentage was well below the .590 mark he posted in 2011. The Mariners are moving the fences in at Safeco Field this offseason, which should benefit Montero, but the lack of pop in the lineup around him leaves little protection for the 23-year-old. Still, Montero provides rare production at catcher and should be a hot commodity on Draft Day, based on his potential. If you draft him in the middle-to-late rounds, you might get great value for the pick. (Updated 12/11/12) |
