| Jesus Montero out 4-6 weeks |
by Jeff Lippman | CBSSports.com (6/4/13) Mariners manager Eric Wedge said Tuesday on MLB Network Radio that catcher Jesus Montero will be out 4-6 weeks following surgery on the torn meniscus in his left knee.
Wedge said the injury and time off will give Montero a chance to collect himself mentally. The team hopes he'll be a better player when he returns.
The 23-year-old Montero is hitting .208 with three homers, nine RBI but 21 strikeouts over 101 at-bats.

| Jesus Montero to require knee surgery |
by Chris Towers | CBSSports.com (6/1/13) Mariners catcher Jesus Montero suffered a torn meniscus in his left knee at Triple-A Tacoma, the team announced Saturday. Montero will require surgery to repair the injury sometime in the next week, and it is not clear when he suffered the injury or how.
Montero has not played since Wednesday and was batting .250 in seven games since being demoted.

| Jesus Montero solid at first so far |
by Nando Di Fino | Senior Fantasy Writer (5/30/13) With six minor-league games under his belt, demoted Mariners catcher Jesus Montero already has three doubles and five runs scored. But, more importantly, he has yet to commit an error at first base, his new position.
Montero has gotten 45 chances at first base through five games (he caught one game), with 42 putouts and three assists. It's doubtful that he'll get called right back up if Justin Smoak's injury continues to bother him and he's forced to go on the DL. But Montero's quick transition of first base is encouraging, considering his bat should be fine, based on past performance.
Owned in 36 percent of leagues, Montero makes for a decent hold in deeper leagues (for a patient owner) and an excellent trade target in dynasty formats.

| Jesus Montero officially optioned to minors |
by Michael Hurcomb | CBSSports.com (5/23/13) The Mariners officially optioned catcher Jesus Montero to Triple-A Tacoma Thursday. A corresponding move isn't expected to be made until Friday, but Seattle is expected to promote Tacoma backup catcher Jesus Sucre, as first reported by The News Tribune.

| Jesus Montero worth a hold in deep leagues |
by Nando Di Fino | Senior Fantasy Writer (5/23/13) In 101 at-bats prior to his Thursday demotion, Mariners catcher Jesus Montero hit .208 with three home runs and one double.
This was coming on the heels of an encouraging 2012 in which he hit .260 with 15 home runs and 20 doubles. And all of that came off a minor-league career which saw the 23-year-old hit .308, with four 17-plus home run campaigns over five seasons.
Montero can hit, but he has proven to be a pretty bad catcher. So he'll learn first base down on the farm, a process that may not take too long considering this is not a foreign idea to him. We know Montero can hit -- his 2013 line was doomed thanks to spotty playing time and repeated failures and stresses behind the plate. With the burden of having to call games and handle a staff now gone, Montero has been freed to simply take grounders and regain his offensive potential.
Granted, Montero doesn't even have a spot at DH or first base open for him once he does come around. But injuries (and slumps) can change things on a daily basis. If you absolutely need a replacement, we offered up some suggestions on Fantasy Baseball Today. I am holding Montero in 14-team-and-deeper Roto formats. I may even trade for him or scoop him off the discard pile in some leagues. Montero can hit, and it shouldn't be too long (mid-July?) until he pops back up with a far sunnier outlook.

| Jesus Montero showed some prolific power during his time in the minors and during his callup with the Yankees in 2011, but disappointed a bit in his first full season in the majors. He batted just .245 with eight home runs and 28 RBI in the first half before picking it up a bit after the All-Star break. He would end up batting .260 with 15 homers and 62 RBI in 135 games while splitting time behind the plate and at DH. His inconsistencies at the plate caused his ownership to drop as the season went on and his .386 slugging percentage was well below the .590 mark he posted in 2011. The Mariners are moving the fences in at Safeco Field this offseason, which should benefit Montero, but the lack of pop in the lineup around him leaves little protection for the 23-year-old. Still, Montero provides rare production at catcher and should be a hot commodity on Draft Day, based on his potential. If you draft him in the middle-to-late rounds, you might get great value for the pick. (Updated 12/11/12) |
