| Austin Romine finds defensive 'groove' |
by Michael Hurcomb | CBSSports.com (5/20/13) Yankees rookie catcher Austin Romine is making great strides defensively. After being behind the plate for a 9-1 loss in his season debut April 29, the Yankees are undefeated in Romine's last five starts and the opposition has scored seven runs off New York pitchers in those wins.
"It’s like night and day," Romine told the New York Post on how he feels defensively. "I feel like I’m in a groove."
Yankees manager Joe Girardi agrees.
"I think he’s gotten in a better rhythm with our pitchers," Girardi said. "It’s always tough when you come in the middle of the season as a catcher, especially when you’re a young catcher. ... There could be a day when a guy doesn’t have everything and that makes it even harder."

| Austin Romine learning from Joe Girardi |
by Jeff Lippman | CBSSports.com (5/19/13) Yankees catcher Austin Romine is learning from someone with a lot of experience behind the plate -- manager Joe Girardi, MLB.com reports Sunday. Girardi has praised Romine's defensive, though his hitting may need work.
"I think he's gotten into a better rhythm with our pitchers. He has a better understanding," said Girardi. "He's been able to watch them a few times. He's gotten back there with I think almost everybody at this point. I think he's just getting more comfortable."
Romine is batting .182. He's been seeing more time of late with Francisco Cervelli on the DL and Chris Stewart battling a recent injury.

| Austin Romine struggling to catch on |
by Bill Passonno | CBSSports.com (5/14/13) Yankees catcher Austin Romine admitted he has endured a difficult transition to the majors due to his reduced workload after playing every day in Triple-A, the New York Post reports. Romine, who was recalled from Scranton/Wilkes-Barre late last month after Francisco Cervelli went down with a hand injury, recorded his first hit of the season in his fourth game Monday at Cleveland.
"It’s a little hard," said Romine, who has earned just three starts."I'm used to a routine and being the guy who comes in knowing what I’m doing every single day. It’s my job right now. [Chris] Stewart knows the team better."

| Austin Romine picks up first career RBI |
by Adam Moore | CBSSports.com (5/13/13) Yankees catcher Austin Romine notched his first career big-league RBI in Game 2 of Monday's doubleheader against the Indians. Romine roped a run-scoring double off starter Trevor Bauer in the seventh inning, which was also his first hit of the season.
He finished 1 for 4 with a run scored and two strikeouts in the 7-0 win.

| Yankees avoiding Austin Romine |
by Jeff Lippman | CBSSports.com (5/4/13) Yankees manager Joe Girardi appears to be hesitant to use Austin Romine behind the plate again after the struggles he had catching Andy Pettitte April 29 against Houston, MLB.com reports.
Romine hasn't started in the last four games and isn't expected to start Sunday, with Chris Snyder at catcher.

| With Russell Martin packing his bags for Pittsburgh, the Yankees have a three-headed catching monster lined up for 2012, with only two of the options likely making the team. Austin Romine and Francsico Cervelli are the two best starting candidates, with the 24-year-old Romine, twice ranked among Baseball America's top 100 prospects, looking like he is headed to Triple-A, at least initially, as he shakes off rust from a 2011 almost entirely lost to a back injury. Romine has decent power and has stolen as many as 11 bases in a minor league season. He has a career .278 minor league batting average and should be in line for plenty of doubles when he arrives. For now, though, it looks like Cervelli will start, with Stewart backing him up, and Romine falling somewhere between an AL-only reserve and a keeper league option. (Updated 1/4/13) |
