Orioles' Chris Davis out to prove he is better than a .196 hitter

by Michael Hurcomb | CBSSports.com
(2/25/15) Orioles first baseman Chris Davis is out to prove this season he is a better hitter than his .196 average in 2014 showed, per MLB.com.

“I always feel like if I’m swinging the bat well, I’m going to carry a good average and the home runs are going to be there, the RBI are going to be there," he said. "I think the thing that really killed me was early on obviously the oblique, but I was carrying a decent batting average and I actually had a good number of RBI, but my home runs were down. It was cold. There were some balls you hit that didn’t leave and you kind of start second-guessing yourself.

"The worst thing I could have done was go out there and try to hit home runs and I did that, and you saw the effects of that on my average. There was no doubt that was extremely disappointing. I know I’m way better than a .196 hitter and hopefully go back out there and prove it this year.”

Orioles' Chris Davis receives therapeutic-use exemption

by Chris Cwik | CBSSports.com
(2/24/15) Orioles infielder Chris Davis received a therapeutic-use exemption for 2015, but not for Adderall, according to FoxSports.com.

Instead, Davis received an exemption for Vyvanse, which is also used to treat attention-deficit disorder. Davis tested positive for Adderall last season, leading to a 25-game suspension. Vyvanse is less likely to be abused for non-therapeutic reasons, according to MLB doctors, which is why it's been suggested over Adderall.

Davis has tried the new drug this winter, and said it's worked well thus far. "That was part of the process – try the Vyvanse to see I liked it, if I liked it better or wanted to go back to Adderall," Davis said. "I liked Vyvanse better."

Davis still has one game left on his suspension, and will miss opening day this year. After that, Davis said he's "good to go."

The 28-year-old hit .196/.300/.404 over 450 at-bats last year.

Orioles likely to use a combo of players to replace Markakis in RF

by Michael Hurcomb | CBSSports.com
(2/23/15) Orioles manager Buck Showalter is expecting to use a few players in right field to replace Nick Markakis, who signed a free-agent deal with the Braves in the offseason.

"We're equipped to have that be a two- or three-headed player," Showalter said of the Orioles' right-field situation which could include a combination of Travis SniderSteve PearceDelmon YoungAlejandro De Aza and Chris Davis, per MLB.com. "It also allows us to keep everybody in the flow and have everybody make contributions with their skill set. But somebody steps out there and takes off with it … that's why I think Steve [Pearce] graduated a little bit from that [role as a part-time player]."

Chris Davis plans to adjust strategy while hitting against the shift

by Brandon Wise | CBSSports.com
(2/14/15) Orioles first baseman Chris Davis struggled in 2014 from the plate, especially hitting against a defensive shift. So much so, in fact, Davis is planning to see the adjustment and change his approach at the plate accordingly.

I think there are definitely situations where I need to bunt, and I know there was some frustration last year obviously with my batting average being as low as it was - not only on my part but the fan base and maybe even on some of my teammates' part - as far as me hitting into the shift," Davis said on the "Hot Stove Show" on 105.7 The Fan.

Davis hit for his second-lowest average of his career in 2014, post a .196 average with 26 home runs and 76 RBI.

I think the biggest thing for me last year was just seeing how drastic the shift was. I remember when Texas came in, I hit something like three or four balls on a line in the four hole, which is right over the first baseman's right shoulder. These are balls that most of the time are going to be singles, if not doubles, and the second baseman caught them at his chest on a line, and I was just thinking, 'Man, that's not even fair. Those are good hits right there that are being taken away.'"

Orioles' Davis wants more at-bats this spring, '100 percent healthy'

by Michael Hurcomb | CBSSports.com
(2/11/15) Orioles first baseman Chris Davis told manager Buck Showalter he wants more at-bats this spring, per MASNsports.com.

Davis had a productive spring at the plate in 2014, batting .405 with three doubles, four home runs, 13 RBI and 10 runs. But he had only 37 at-bats and could not carry the spring momentum into the regular season, finishing with a .196/.404/.704 slash line.

"I think last year, I was not playing it safe, but we kind of eased into it and I really didn't feel like I had that sharpness when the season started," Davis said in an interview with 105.7 The Fan. "And then obviously with the injury early on, I wasn't the same hitter that I was in the past. I think that's going to be big for me this year, getting started off on the right foot."

Davis admitted an oblique injury robbed him of his power to hit to left and left-center field.

"I didn't notice how big of a deal it was until this offseason, until I had a chance to take a little bit of time off and then get back into my routine and start hitting again," he said. "It kind of bothered me looking back, just the way I handled things. One, I foolishly tried to play through it, which just made it worse. And two, everybody told me, 'Don't come back too early. Make sure you take the time, make sure you're healthy,' but the competitor in me just wanted to get back out on the field. I felt like I was healthy enough, and really I just played the rest of the year with a nagging injury.

"It really wasn't as evident how bad it affected me until this offseason, but I'm completely 100 percent healthy right now and actually a little bit stronger than I was at this point last year."
