| Mitchell Boggs on his way back |
by Chris Towers | CBSSports.com (5/18/13) Cardinals reliever Mitchell Boggs, who lost his closer's job and was sent to Triple-A to work on his mechanics, is set to be recalled Sunday, according to the St. Louis Post-Dispatch. The Cardinals are planning to place Jaime Garcia on the 15-day disabled list with a shoulder strain.
Boggs has a 5.06 ERA for Triple-A Memphis in 5 1/3 innings, with five walks and four strikeouts. He had a 12.66 ERA in 10 2/3 innings in the majors before his demotion.

| Mike Matheny: Mitchell Boggs needs focus in minors |
by Ed Gauna | CBSSports.com (5/14/13) Cardinals reliever Mitchell Boggs has thrown five scoreless innings since being demoted to Triple-A Memphis. Manager Mike Matheny told the St. Louis Post-Dispatch on Tuesday that he has kept in contact with Boggs and the staff at Memphis since sending the right-hander down.
"It sounds like he’s made some good mechanical adjustments," Matheny said. "It looks like he’s in a real good spot."
Matheny added that Boggs should continue to concentrate on getting better and not when he will be recalled, however.
"He needs not to even think about (coming back)," Matheny said. "Anybody who gets sent down needs to focus all their attention on what they need to do that particular day to help that team they’re with. The other stuff works itself out. Otherwise, you end up making the process much more difficult than it should be. Just control how you pitch. And it will work itself out."

| Cardinals relievers making progress in minors |
by Ed Gauna | CBSSports.com (5/7/13) Cardinals relievers Mitchell Boggs and Marc Rzepczynski have made some progress since being demoted to the minors, MLB.com reports.
Boggs made his first appearance for Triple-A Memphis Sunday and worked a scoreless inning. The right-hander posted a 12.66 ERA in 14 appearances in the majors.
Rzepczynski has allowed two runs over 4 1/3 innings pitched for Memphis after posting a 7.88 ERA in nine appearances for St. Louis.
"It sounds like they're getting some things going in a good direction," manager Mike Matheny said Tuesday.

| Cards drop Mitchell Boggs to minors |
by Bill Passonno | CBSSports.com (5/3/13) After shifting between several roles in the bullpen, including a failed attempt as closer, Cardinals pitcher Mitchell Boggs was optioned to Triple-A Memphis Friday. St. Louis recalled hard-throwing prospect Carlos Martinez to take his spot in the bullpen.
Boggs was yanked from the closer role last month after blowing two saves and having an 11.37 ERA after seven appearances. Despite a reduced role, the right-hander struggled, allowing five walks over his past two innings, including two against the Brewers Thursday night.

| Mitchell Boggs still struggling in new role |
by Chris Cwik | CBSSports.com (4/29/13) Cardinals reliever Mitchell Boggs gave up three runs in just two-thirds of an inning Sunday.
Boggs has been working in low-leverage situations after losing the closer role to Edward Mujica. Manager Mike Matheny said Boggs was throwing well, but was done in by bloop hits.
Boggs echoed that statement, saying, "I’ll take what I had today. I’ll take that out there against anybody in baseball and feel confident." Even if Boggs is able to turn things around, he's probably not a candidate to reclaim the closer role.

| After struggling to find his role in 2011, Mitchell Boggs settled in as the setup man for Jason Motte in 2012 and achieved career-best numbers in the process. Between his 2.21 ERA and 1.05 WHIP, he emerged as one of the better middle relievers in Fantasy, and given how he's learned to control his high-90s fastball, he doesn't look like he's going to fall off that perch anytime soon. Even if his strikeout rate leaves a bit to be desired, Boggs is worth drafting in NL-only Rotisserie leagues as insurance for Motte or help in ERA and WHIP. (Updated 1/8/13) |
