Preseason Outlook

Blanks, long considered the Padres' top prospect, got a quick promotion last June after learning to play the outfield and proved he could do something few hitters can do: hit home runs in PETCO Park. That's what happens for 6-foot-6, 285-pound behemoths: Outfield fences suddenly don't seem as deep. Blanks put on his power display, hitting 10 home runs in only 148 at-bats, despite his 22 years of age. Imagine what he'll do when he hits his prime. He was just beginning to get comfortable, hitting .270 in August, when he strained the arch in his right foot, and the Padres, acting carefully, chose to sit him the rest of the way. But he did enough during his short stint to show he has serious potential in Fantasy, perhaps as soon as this year. He might need a couple years to find his footing, especially given his young age, but he has Prince Fielder-like potential. The chance he breaks out sooner rather than later makes him well worth a late-round pick. (Updated 1/21/10)
