(4/6/14) Orioles closer Tommy Hunter retired the only two hitters he faced in the ninth inning, closing out a 3-1 win Sunday against the Tigers. Hunter finished off a strong start from Chris Tillman, who allowed one run in 8 1/3 innings.
Hunter entered the game after Victor Martinez got a one-out double off Tillman in the ninth. Hunter then got Austin Jackson to strike out and Tyler Collins to ground out to end the game.
Hunter has recorded two saves in his first three appearances this season. He hasn't allowed a run in two innings.
|Tommy Hunter collects save on Opening Day |
|by R.J. White | CBSSports.com|
(3/31/14) Orioles pitcher Tommy Hunter allowed one hit and struck out one in a scoreless ninth inning to pick up the save in Monday's 2-1 win over the Red Sox on Opening Day.
Hunter wasn't tabbed as the team's closer until Monday morning, though it was expected he'd be the preferred ninth-inning choice this season. Monday's save was just the fifth of his career, but he should have the chance to earn plenty more for a team that saw Jim Johnson rack up 101 saves over the previous two seasons.
|Tommy Hunter's transition from mediocre starter to excellent reliever has been pretty impressive. Last season, Hunter posted a 2.81 ERA and 0.99 WHIP over 86 1/3 innings, picking up six relief wins and striking out 68 batters. He had four saves. His average fastball velocity, which had been 91-ish for most of his career, jumped to 96 m.p.h. And with Jim Johnson gone (and Grant Balfour's deal never coming to fruition), Hunter could enter the season as a favorite for saves. If Hunter emerges as the closer, he inherits a role that had Johnson getting 101 saves over the last two seasons, so this could be a boon. Hunter comes with some risk (he may not get the closer job) and downside (his strikeout rate is low for a would-be closer), but those concerns didn't prevent Johnson from having two straight 50-save seasons. Hunter is worth a late-round gamble in Roto leagues, with his value tied tightly to the probability of him closing.
