The Red Sox didn't make much noise this winter after a disasterous end to their 2011 season. Our Al Melchior examines the revamped roster for owners in advance of Draft Day.
Lars Anderson was a top-100 prospect according to Baseball America as recently as two years ago. In fact, he made the cut three straight years from 2008 to 2010. The fact he hasn't since would lead you to believe his opportunity has passed him by. But he's still only 24, giving him a window of two or three years to salvage something of a career. Say what you want about his lack of progress in the minors; he still knows how to take a walk. He still offers some measure of power, and given his size, he still has the potential for more. His path to the majors isn't so clear with David Ortiz back for another year, but an injury could open the door for Anderson. Or a trade to a more favorable situation remains a possibility. Anderson is no longer an exciting pick in long-term keeper leagues, but he's still enough of a talent that someone somewhere will want to give him a look in the not-too-distant future. And if that happens this year, he could surprise in deeper leagues. (Updated 2/9/12)
