| Astros sign Gall, Saccomanno, Smith |
| (1/5/09) OF John Gall and 1B Mark Saccomanno and 2B Jason Smith agreed to minor-league deals with the Astros on Monday. The 30-year-old Gall hit .312 with 12 home runs and 76 RBI last season at Triple-A Albuquerque, while Saccomanno, 28, hit a home run in his first big-league at-bat with Houston last season. He hit .297 with 27 homers and 84 RBI in 137 games for Triple-A Round Rock last season. Smith, 31, hit .214 in 22 games with the Royals last year and .253 with seven triples and 62 RBI at Triple-A Omaha last season. |

| (9/9/08) Pinch-hitting for Houston on Monday against the Pirates, 3B Mark Saccomanno homered on the first pitch he saw in the major leagues to help the surging Astros win. "I went up there very nervous. I don't even remember it, my legs were so weak," Saccomanno said. "It was a great feeling to hit it out. It was like a dream." Saccomanno hit a solo shot in the fifth inning, becoming the fourth Houston player to homer in his first big-league at-bat. |
