|Jason Heyward still lacking thump |
|by Al Melchior | Data Analyst|
(9/15/14) Just before the All-Star break, Jason Heyward started to pick up his batting average, and he hasn't really cooled off since. Over his last 54 games, Heyward is batting .329 with a .387 on-base percentage. Sadly for his Fantasy owners, it's come with very little power.
While Heyward has hit 12 doubles and a triple over that span, he has launched only three home runs. Given that the Braves' outfielder has been an inconsistent power hitter over his five years in the majors, it's reasonable for owners to start wondering if that consistency is ever going to materialize.
In my latest blog post, I have taken a look at Heyward's offensive trends this season to get an early read on what sort of value he will have next season. His ability to make contact (32 strikeouts over his last 207 at-bats) and steal make him a must-start option right now, but given his lack of power, Heyward will be something less than an early-round option in 2015.

(8/18/14) Braves outfielder Jason Heyward hit his 10th home run Monday against the Pirates.
Heyward struck in the first inning. He took a 90 mph fastball out to right field for a solo shot to start the game. Heyward would add two singles, finishing 3 for 4. He scored one run and knocked in two RBI.
|If you look at Jason Heyward's final slash line from last season, you wouldn't think much of his 2013 campaign. He hit .254 with a .427 slugging percentage and .776 OPS. However, his numbers were affected by a slow start. He hit just .146 with a .243 slugging percentage and .533 OPS through the first two months (30 games) and even missed a few weeks in that span recovering from an appendectomy. But once June rolled around, Heyward started to heat up and finished the season performing well, despite missing about a month late in the season with a fractured jaw. Heyward hit .294 with a .373 on-base percentage, .495 slugging percentage, .867 OPS, 12 home runs, 18 doubles, 30 RBI and 50 runs in his final 74 games. After the sluggish start, Heyward started to produce like Fantasy owners expected. He falls into the category of being a high-risk, high-reward pick. You know he has the upside to be an elite Fantasy outfielder, but his struggles to stay consistent from start to finish plays a factor into drafting the 24-year-old slugger. He is more of an early-to-mid-round Fantasy pick depending on how much confidence you have in him.
