| Walk-off gives Antonio Bastardo first win |
by Ed Gauna | CBSSports.com (4/6/13) Phillies reliever Antonio Bastardo entered Saturday's game against the Royals in the ninth inning with his team trailing by two. The right-hander walked the leadoff batter but made it through the frame scoreless.
Bastardo was rewarded with the win when Kevin Frandsen hit a walk-off double in the bottom half of the frame to propel Philadelphia to a 4-3 victory.
The left-hander has yet to allow a run through two innings pitched this year.

| Antonio Bastardo set for new role |
by Bill Passonno | CBSSports.com (3/22/13) With a new role and an improved mindset, Phillies relief pitcher Antonio Bastardo is aiming for his finest season in 2013. The hard-throwing lefty appeared in a career-high 65 games last year and fanned 14.02 hitters per nine innings, behind only Craig Kimbrel (16.6) and Aroldis Chapman (15.3) among NL relievers (minimum 10 games).
"I need to push myself harder," he told the Philadelphia Inquirer. "I'm that kind of guy, if I let myself hang around, I do badly. ... When everything is right, it doesn't matter what hitter is up there."
Despite his glowing numbers, Bastardo will not serve as the setup man this year as that title has been bestowed to Mike Adams, who joined the club in the offseason. The Phillies believe Bastardo will benefit from the presence of the veteran right-hander and the comfort of a position with less stress.
"Mike Adams is going to be good for Antonio," pitching coach Rich Dubee said.

| Phils expect Bastardo to rebound |
by Michael Hurcomb | CBSSports.com (2/17/13) MLB.com reports the Phillies expect reliever Antonio Bastardo to rebound in 2013 after an up and down 2012 campaign. "There was something," Phillies pitching coach Rich Dubee said. "Not delivery-wise as much as it was using both sides of the plate. He was dominant right-handed in, fastball and slider behind it. He did not pitch away very much to right-handed hitters. He started using both sides of the plate more. Antonio's fine. He's fine. Like I said the other day: Put him out there. Put him on the wire and see if 29 teams don't come calling. You don't think they do?"

| Antonio Bastardo will guarantee a Fantasy owner one category: strikeouts. And lots of them. Over the last three seasons, Bastardo struck out 12.4 batters per nine innings. The problem with Bastardo, though, is his consistency. In those last three seasons, he's sported ERAs of 4.34, 2.64, and 4.33. The encouraging sign is that his WHIP in the most recent 4.30-plus season (1.27) was markedly lower than his WHIP in the first (1.50). He's not quite at Aroldis Chapman-type levels, but Bastardo is the poor man's version of the Reds fireballer. He's worth a $1 bid in NL-only leagues as a nice strikeout source who could find his way into some saves if anything happens to Jonathan Papelbon. (Updated 1/4/13) |
