Astros ask third baseman Matt Dominguez to learn first base
|by Sean d'Oliveira | CBSSports.com|
|(1/24/15) With the Astros recently acquiring infielder Luis Valbuena, third baseman Matt Dominguez has been asked to start learning how to play first base, reports the Houston Chronicle.
"You get a bigger glove, so it can't be that hard," Dominguez said.
Dominguez has spent the last two seasons as the full-time third baseman for the Astors, but he will compete with Valbuena for the starting role this season. If Valbuena wins the third base job, the Astros want Dominguez to be able to switch to first base.
"[Astros manager A.J. Hinch] thinks I'm going to be a third baseman, but he wants to also help me try to make the team by adding a little more versatility and move around a little bit more," Dominguez said. "Do whatever I need to do."
Luis Valbuena, Matt Dominguez to compete for Astros' starting 3B job

|(1/19/15) Astros general manager Jeff Lunhow said infielder Luis Valbuena, who was acquired Monday in a trade with the Cubs, will compete with Matt Dominguez for the starting job at third base.
“If a player isn’t helping us win games … we have other options,” Luhnow said, per the Houston Chronicle. “Valbuena will get a long hard look at third base.”
The 29-year-old Valbuena has spent the last three seasons with the Cubs. He hit .249 with a career-best 16 home runs, 33 doubles and 55 RBI in 149 games in 2014. He has a career .229 average over seven MLB seasons with the Mariners, Indians and Cubs.
The 25-year-old Dominguez hit .215 with 16 home runs and 57 RBI in 157 games in 2014. He is a career .233 hitter over four MLB seasons.
“Valbuena played every day at third … we’ve got to sort it out," manager A.J. Hinch said. "The steadiness that he brings at third base is certainly an attribute we’re going to look at.”
Matt Dominguez grabbing some pine Saturday

Dominguez has just five hits in his last 35 at-bats.
Matt Dominguez gets first day off since April
|by Chris Towers | CBSSports.com|
|(8/16/14) The Astros are finally giving third baseman Matt Dominguez a day off Saturday, his first since late April, a span of nearly four months straight in the lineup.
Dominguez has appeared in all but one of the Astros games this season, but has been in a prolonged slump and probably needed the day off. He is hitting just .214/.237/.304 in 56 at-bats during August.
Matt Dominguez homers, drive four runs in win over White Sox
|by Igor Mello | CBSSports.com|
|(7/20/14) Astros third baseman Matt Dominguez homered and drove in four runs in his team's 11-7 victory over the White Sox in Chicago on Sunday. |
Dominguez took starter John Danks deep for a two-run home run in the fifth inning. He also added a run-scoring single in the third inning and a run-scoring double n the seventh. He finished 3 for 5 with two runs scored and four RBI. He owns a .239/.286/.375 slash line with 12 homers and 43 RBI in 368 at-bats this season.
|2014 summary: Matt Dominguez showed some promise in 2013 -- his first full season with the Astros -- but he wasn't able to build on it last season. If anything, Dominguez took a step backwards; he struck out 29 more times in just 21 more at-bats, and his batting average fell from .241 to .215. Less frequent contact and fewer flyballs meant diminished power. After banging out 21 home runs and 25 doubles in 2013, he hit just 16 home runs and 17 doubles last season.|
Playing time status: Dominguez should go unopposed for the starting third base job in Houston at the start of this season, but Colin Moran could challenge him by season's end.
2015 outlook: Even if Dominguez hangs onto his job for the bulk of the season, there are enough questions about his bat to make him a suspect choice in mixed leagues. A 20-home run season might not even be enough, given how much of a hole he could dig for your team in batting average and on-base percentage. Save Dominguez for your AL-only leagues.
