(6/7/14) Astros third baseman Matt Dominguez broke a two-game hitless streak in style Friday night in Minnesota.
Dominguez singled twice and ripped a 416-foot home run in the fourth inning to key a victory for his resurgent team. It was his ninth tater and first three-hit game of the season. He has hit safely in 10 of his last 13 games.
|Written off by the Marlins, who loved his glove but weren't convinced he'd ever amount to anything with the bat, Matt Dominguez got a chance to get comfortable with the Astros last year and showed that he might just be a long-term option for them. His 21 home runs, the first of which came May 11 -- again, after he had a chance to get comfortable -- were eighth-most among third basemen. Granted, that's about all he had to offer offensively -- he's not especially disciplined, won't hit bunches of doubles and doesn't run -- but at a time when home runs are becoming more and more scarce, that's something. Most likely, Dominguez won't get drafted in mixed leagues, but in terms of projected output, he's not so far off from the Nolan Arenado, Will Middlebrooks and Mike Moustakas types who do, even if he doesn't have quite the same upside.
