| Brian Matusz staying in bullpen -- for now |

(4/20/13) Orioles manager Buck Showalter told MLB.com Saturday that Brian Matusz will remain in the bullpen.
Matusz worked a scoreless inning in Game 1 of Saturday's doubleheader against the Dodgers and has a 1.35 ERA through seven appearances.
"We still think he has that potential [to be a starter]," Showalter said. "Right now, he's in our bullpen. But he's not so far removed with the innings he's pitched to still be an option [as a starter]."

(3/29/13) Brian Matusz has made the Orioles as a reliever, MASN reports.
Matusz, 26, failed as a starter last season as he allowed a brutal 5.42 ERA and 1.713 WHIP in 16 starts (84.2 innings). He was excellent upon a late-season transition to the bullpen, as he allowed just two runs on five hits and three walks over 13.1 innings, including an eye-popping 19 strikeouts.
It's a small sample as a reliever, but it wouldn't be surprising if he succeeds in the bullpen. Matusz has struggled to turn his excellent stuff into strikeouts as a starter, as he owns a mediocre 7.1 K/9 out of the rotation. Even more worrying, he has served up 57 home runs in 68 starts, a brutal 1.45 HR/9. Starters transitioning to relief often improve those two statistics in particular, especially when they throw as hard as Matusz -- see the Rule of 17 -- so he'll be one to watch in the bullpen this season.

(3/24/13) Orioles rotation candidate Brian Matusz got his chance to state his case for manager Buck Showalter in a Grapefruit League start Sunday against the Pirates. Staked to an 8-0 lead before he even stepped foot on the mound, Matusz did not put his best foot forward against the Pirates.
Matusz completed just four innings as he surrendered five runs on nine hits and a walk. He allowed a two-run home run to Andrew McCutchen in the first inning and only pitched one clean frame. Matusz threw 67 pitches and 46 went for strikes as he struck out two batters. His struggles came against the same team that Jake Arrieta pitched well against Thursday.
With Matusz's ability and experience as a left-handed specialist in the bullpen, the scales now seem to tip heavily in favor of Arrieta winning the No. 5 rotation spot. Of course, Steve Johnson and Jair Jurrjens remain in the running and Showalter has not officially ruled Matusz out yet, either.

(3/19/13) Orioles starting pitcher Brian Matusz permitted one run and six hits over five innings during Baltimore's 8-7 victory over Boston in Grapefruit League action Tuesday. Matusz, who remains in the team's battle for the final spot in the rotation, had two strikeouts and walked a batter. He has now issued one walk in each of his past two games, spanning nine innings.
"At times, I feel I'm throwing too many strikes and gave up a couple of two-strike hits today," the left-hander told MASNSports.com. "I'd like to bury the slider a little better, get that changeup down in the zone, but for the most part I was able to find a rhythm and find consistency out there."

(3/13/13) Baltimore rotation candidate Brian Matusz may have just put manager Buck Showalter on notice on Wednesday night in a Grapefruit League start against the Twins. A starter-turned-lefty-specialist last season, Matusz was hoping to compete for the rotation again this spring. He's come on strong after a slow start and definitely impressed against the Twins. Matusz went four innings and did not allow a hit or run with just one walk and seven strikeouts. He lowered his spring ERA to 2.70 in the process. Matusz has allowed just three runs and six hits over 10 spring innings with 11 Ks.

| Few players have experienced the drastic ups and downs that Brian Matusz has over the course of his career. Rated the No. 5 prospect by Baseball America entering 2010, he disappointed out of the gate that year only to win over Fantasy owners with a 2.18 ERA over his final 11 starts. He followed that up with a 10.69 ERA in 2011, the worst in baseball history for a pitcher with at least 12 starts. He wasn't much better in 16 starts last year, posting a 5.42 ERA, but then after an uninspiring stint at Triple-A Norfolk, he returned to post a 1.35 ERA in 18 relief appearances, striking out 19 batters in 13 1/3 innings. Part of the reason he was so dominant in relief is because he was able to cut loose with his fastball, regaining the velocity he had lost during that disastrous 2011. So then, is pitching out of the bullpen the only way he's effective now? The Orioles aim to find out this spring. They'll stretch Matusz out just to see if the success he had as a reliever translates to the starting rotation, but if it doesn't, back to the bullpen he'll go. He'll have AL-only value in either role, but the chance of him starting makes him worth the extra dollar. (Updated 1/9/13) |
