Rangers' Derek Holland struggles in final spring start
|by R.J. White | CBSSports.com|
|(3/31/15) Rangers pitcher Derek Holland allowed five runs (four earned) on six hits and two walks in 5 1/3 innings while striking out four in Tuesday's 15-10 loss to the Cubs.
Holland threw three scoreless innings in his spring debut but couldn't match his success Tuesday, giving up just one run through four innings before the Cubs racked up four more runs in the fifth. He was making just his second start of Cactus League play after dealing with shoulder soreness earlier in camp. Holland is expected to pitch the team's home opener April 10.
Rangers' Holland ready to bounce back from shortened 2014
|by R.J. White | CBSSports.com|
|(3/30/15) Rangers pitcher Derek Holland missed much of last season while recovering from knee surgery, and after an excellent stretch at the end of the season upon his return, the pitcher is eager to leave his health issues behind, MLB.com reports.
"In my case last year, the offseason hit and I wanted to keep playing," Holland said. "Now we get to start the season, and I've got all this energy and I'm ready to just let it go."
Holland delivered a 1.46 ERA and 25:5 K:BB ratio in 37 innings last September and has been limited to just three innings this spring due to a shoulder issue.
"I definitely want to prove a lot," Holland said. "Obviously, everybody thinks about my knee, how's that, am I going to be OK? I showed a little bit at the end of the season last year, and now I'm going to show you a lot more this year. I'm a lot stronger, a lot healthier, a lot better. I feel confident with everything. I want to be able to show the fans that whatever happened last year, it's over."
Rangers P Derek Holland on track for home opener
|by Dave Peters | CBSSports.com|
|(3/26/15) Rangers pitcher Derek Holland is on track to pitch in the team's home opener, according to the Dallas Morning News.
Holland had been dealing with some shoulder soreness earlier in spring training. The lefty will be held out until the home opener, which is the fifth game of the season.
Manager Jeff Banister seems content with holding him out to help avoid a setback.
"There are two opening days," Banister said.
Holland has only pitched three innings this spring, giving up two hits and a walk.
Three shutout innings for Rangers' Derek Holland
|by Shawn Krest | CBSSports.com|
|(3/20/15) Derek Holland made his A-game debut for the Rangers with three shutout innings on Friday.
Holland, battling a sore shoulder, pitched an inning in a B-squad game a week ago.
In his Cactus League debut for the Rangers, he allowed two hits and walked one while facing 11 batters. Holland threw 32 pitches, 21 of them strikes.
|2014 summary: After a breakthrough 2013 in which he emerged as a reliable middle-of-the-rotation option in Fantasy with a 3.42 ERA, 1.29 WHIP and 8.0 strikeouts per nine innings, Derek Holland tripped over his dog on the stairs that offseason, tearing the meniscus in his left knee. Holland didn't take the mound until September but proved to be no worse for wear with the six appearances (including five starts) he got, consistently pitching deep into games with a 1.46 ERA.|
Playing time status: After an uneventful offseason, Holland is poised to reclaim his rightful spot just behind Yu Darvish in the Rangers starting rotation and doesn't really have anyone standing in his way. He had some shoulder issues early in his career, but with those long past, it wouldn't be surprising to see him bounce back with 200-plus innings.
2015 outlook: At a time in baseball when a 1.25 WHIP and 8.0 strikeouts per nine innings are normal, Holland isn't exactly a standout at starting pitcher, but he's clearly an asset there. After some control issues early in his career, he's proven to be steady from start to start and, despite the Rangers' struggles last year, should have a good offense backing him. You should be able to draft him after the top 60 starting pitchers are off the board, but he has the potential of a No. 3 starting pitcher in 12-team leagues.
