Seth Smith leading off for Mariners on Wednesday

by Jason Butt | CBSSports.com
(4/22/15) The Mariners are going with Seth Smith at leadoff for Wednesday night's game against the Astros.

Smith will serve as Seattle's designated hitter for this game with Nelson Cruz playing right field. Dustin Ackley, who hit leadoff on Tuesday, is playing in left field and is batting seventh. First baseman Logan Morrison is hitting sixth.

Mariners' Morrison spends offseason working on improving durability

by Michael Hurcomb | CBSSports.com
(2/26/15) Mariners first baseman Logan Morrison has struggled to stay healthy through his first five years in the majors. In order to improve his durability, Morrison said he hired a new trainer in the offseason, per The News Tribune.

“I think I’m a little more educated about my body,” he said. “He’s given me a program to do -- whether it’s a warm-up every day or a three-day-a-week workout program. Hopefully, that will keep me healthy.”

Morrison is confident he will be a valuable part of the lineup, as long as he can stay healthy.

“Just put me in the lineup every day,” he vowed, “and I’ll produce. It’s up to me to stay in the lineup, but if I’m in the lineup every day, I know I’m going to hit, and I know I’m going to hit well and be a force in the lineup.”

Mariners manager Lloyd McClendon is optimistic Morrison can reach his full potential.

“LoMo is relatively young as far as active years under his belt,” McClendon said. “He’s still maturing from that standpoint. He’s still learning. I think his ceiling is very high.

“I think, all in all, he’s got a chance to be  a guy who can hit 25 home runs for us and drive in 100. He’s a good hitter. He hits left-handers and right-handers. He takes his walks."

Report: Mariners, Austin Jackson agree to $7.7-million deal

by R.J. White | CBSSports.com
(1/16/15) The Mariners have avoided arbitration with outfielder Austin Jackson by agreeing to a one-year deal worth $7.7 million, the Seattle Times reports.

The team was able to avoid arbitration with five players in all Friday by agreeing to the terms of one-year contracts for each player. First basman Logan Morrison is scheduled to make $2.725 million with incentives for reaching 500 and 600 plate appearances. Outfielder Dustin Ackley will take in $2.6 million as well as another $50,000 bonus for reaching 500 plate appearances.

Outfielder Justin Ruggiano, who was acquired from the Cubs earlier this offseason, will make $2.5 million and can earn another $20,000 if he reaches 375 plate appearances. Pitcher Charlie Furbush will earn $1.3 million.

Mariners 1B Logan Morrison in line for full-time duty

by R.J. White | CBSSports.com
(12/10/14) Mariners first baseman Logan Morrison is in line to be the team's regular first baseman in 2015, the Tacoma News Tribune reports.

"Listen, I’ve always said that playing time is dictated on performance," manager Lloyd McClendon said, "and he performed very well. As we speak right now, I’d be very happy if things work out that he’s my regular first baseman."

Morrison hit .262/.315/.420 with 11 home runs and 38 RBI in 336 at-bats in 2014 but improved in the second half, hitting .284/.341/.448 in 201 second-half at-bats.
