Phillies' Ben Revere out to overcome pain-filled 2014 season

by Brandon Wise | CBSSports.com
(1/20/15) Phillies centerfielder Ben Revere revealed Tuesday he dealt with a lot of pain in his right ankle for much of the 2014 season. In 2013, Revere's season was cut short after he fractured his ankle, which required surgical screws to be placed in it. The screws stayed in his ankle during the 2014 season.

"The more the season went on it just got worse and worse and worse," Revere said.

He also received much scarier news from doctors after the season was over.

"The doctors told me after the surgery that the screws were going into my nerves and that is what was causing all the pain," Revere said. "They told me I was lucky I didn't get any nerve damage or anything. It's fully healed now. I can do everything. I can do power lifting. I couldn't even squat last year. I'm squatting 400 pounds now. Last year, my hamstring [shut] down, my quads were weak. Now, I'm getting all my strength back."

New Phillies manager Ryne Sandberg said he thinks Revere needs to work on his extra-base hitting heading into the 2015 season.

"He hasn't found his full stride on what he can do on a baseball field," Sandberg said. "He's a strong kid, but he hits all singles. For me, that doesn't add up. I see him as a potential 30 to 40 doubles type of a hitter mainly because he makes so much contact and he is strong. He has the ability to pop the ball to the gaps and down the lines. He does use the whole field when he hits and he's a base stealer, so for me that shows the potential to translate into a doubles hitter."

Revere hit .306 in 2014 with 28 RBI and 71 runs scored in 601 at-bats.

Phillies lock up Domonic Brown, Ben Revere for 2015

by Igor Mello | CBSSports.com
(1/16/15) The Phillies have avoided arbitration with outfielders Domonic Brown and Ben Revere prior to Friday's deadline, reports the Philadelphia Daily News. Revere signed a $.1 million contract, while Brown settled for $2.5 million for 2015. Brown was arbitration-eligible for the first time this season, while Revere entered his second-year of eligibility after his 2014 campaign.

Brown had a bit of a down year after being selected to the All-Star game in 2013. He hit .235 with 10 home runs last season. Revere hit .306 with two homers and 28 RBI over 601 at-bats in 2014.

Phillies OF Ben Revere's ankle pain-free

by R.J. White | CBSSports.com
(12/6/14) Phillies outfielder Ben Revere said Saturday that he's finally pain-free after dealing with an ankle injury all season, MLB.com reports.

"I feel no pain," he said. "I've been running and cutting. No pain. I feel good. It slowed me up definitely. Some jumps after the ball I hesitated because of it. I knew it was there. Some bases I tried to steal, running down the line I'd slow down, hitting, trying to get out of the box, diving for a ball. It was tough. It was so frustrating."

Revere broke his ankle in July 2013 and played with screws in the ankle in 2014, resulting in a frequent pained expression on his face throughout the season. He had the screws removed at the end of September and believes he can improve on his statistics next season. Revere hit .306/.325/.361 with two home runs, 28 RBI and 49 stolen bases in 601 at-bats in 2014.

Report: Phillies to offer contracts to Brown, Bastardo, Revere

by Chris Cwik | CBSSports.com
(12/1/14) The Phillies are expected to offer contracts to Domonic Brown, Antonio Bastardo and Ben Revere, according to MLB.com

All three players are eligible for salary arbitration. The team has until 11:59 p.m. ET on Tuesday to extend an offer to the group. If the Phillies do not offer a contract to these players, they would become free agents. All three players are expected to play a role on the club in 2015, so keeping them around shouldn't come as a surprise.

Phillies OF Ben Revere undergoes surgery to remove screws from ankle

by Michael Hurcomb | CBSSports.com
(10/1/14) The Phillies announced Wednesday outfielder Ben Revere had surgery Tuesday to remove screws from his right ankle. Revere will be in a walking boot for about two weeks, but he is expected to be ready for the start of spring training.
