Cubs designate pitcher Phil Coke for assignment

by Brandon Wise | CBSSports.com
(5/18/15) The Cubs have designated pitcher Phil Coke for assignment, according to MLB.com. Coke has appeared in 16 games this season for Chicago, posting a 6.30 ERA with nine strikeouts and three walks in 10 innings of work. The move is expected to clear a roster spot for Tsuyoshi Wada, who is expected to start Wednesday's game, moving Travis Wood to the bullpen.

Phil Coke: My reworked mechanics helped me earn a roster spot

by Igor Mello | CBSSports.com
(3/31/15) Phil Coke told reporters his reworked mechanics helped him earn a roster spot as a reliever with the Cubs, according to MLB.com.

"They took their time, they made the decisions they wanted to make, and I'm still here, and I'm happy about it," Coke said. "There was a moment of wondering. I don't know what's going on upstairs, that's not my concern."

Coke went 5-2 with a 3.88 ERA and one save in 62 relief appearances for Detroit in 2014. He signed a minor-league deal on March 5, and has yet to surrender a run in 7 2/3 innings of work this spring.

Cubs P Phil Coke was told he's made 40-man roster

by Jason Butt | CBSSports.com
(3/30/15) The Cubs told reliever Phil Coke that he has made this year's 40-man roster, the organization announced

Coke signed a minor-league deal on March 5. The left-hander has appeared in 7.1 innings this spring and has yet to give up a run. He's allowed five hits.

With the Tigers last season, Coke posted a 3.88 ERA in 58 innings pitched.

Phil Coke signs minor-league deal with Cubs

by Michael Hurcomb | CBSSports.com
(3/5/15) The Cubs have agreed to a minor-league deal with free agent reliever Phil Coke, according to CBSSports.com Baseball Insider Jon Heyman. He has received an invite to major-league camp.

Coke turned down at least one major-league offer for a chance to compete for a spot in the Cubs' bullpen, one source told FOX Sports.

“They just all made me feel very welcomed and I feel like I have a great opportunity to help this team get to next level," Coke said, per FOX Sports. “I am looking forward to challenge of competing for a spot and helping this team bring a championship to north side of Chicago.”

The 32-year-old Coke went 5-2 with a 3.88 ERA and one save in 62 relief outings for Detroit in 2014. He has spent his entire seven-year MLB career in the AL, pitching for the Yankees and Tigers.

Marlins unlikely to add reliever now

by Chris Cwik | CBSSports.com
(2/26/15) The Marlins are unlikely to add a reliever now that Francisco Rodriguez is off the market, according to MLB.com.

The Marlins were involved in negotiations for K-Rod through at least Wednesday, and were reportedly willing to offer $10 million over two years. The club has been looking for a veteran reliever for some time, but may pass now that Rodriguez has signed with the Brewers.

Both Rafael Soriano and Phil Coke have been connected to Miami, but the team would likely only sign those players to minor-league contracts.
