Astros' Samuel Deduno appears to be fading in SP competition

by Michael Hurcomb | CBSSports.com
(3/26/15) It appears the competition for the final spot in the Astros' rotation is down to Asher Wojciechowski and Roberto Hernandez after Samuel Deduno pitched in relief Wednesday against the Phillies. It seems the Astros are lining Deduno up for a role as a sixth starter/long reliever.

“We wanted to simulate more of a long reliever role for him,” manager A.J. Hinch said of Deduno's outing Wednesday, per the Houston Chronicle. “We know we can stretch him out and he can start. He can throw a lot of pitches. He’s got a resilient arm, but he’ll have an outing here where he’ll go pitch, (have a) couple days off, pitch.”

Astros' SP competition down to Hernandez, Deduno, Wojciechowski

by Michael Hurcomb | CBSSports.com
(3/23/15) With the demotion of Dan Straily to the minors on Monday, the competition for the final spot in the Astros rotation is down to Roberto Hernandez, Asher Wojciechowski and Samuel Deduno.

Although, general manager Jeff Lunhow seemed to indicate Hernandez, who is in camp on a minor-league deal, might be the favorite for the final spot in the rotation.

"You look at what's going on with other clubs around baseball, and there's a lot of injuries, and having extra pitchers that are major league-caliber is something we value," general manager Jeff Luhnow said of Hernandez. "That's definitely a consideration."

Wojciechowski has a 0.75 ERA through four spring outings (one start). Hernandez is 3-0 with a 4.50 ERA through four outings (two starts). Deduno is 1-1 with a 4.50 ERA through four appearances (one start).

Five pitchers still vying for final spot in Astros' rotation

by Michael Hurcomb | CBSSports.com
(3/19/15) Astros manager A.J. Hinch indicated Thursday the final spot in the rotation remains up for grabs, per the Houston Chronicle. The candidates vying for the fifth spot in the rotation are Samuel Deduno, Asher Wojciechowski, Roberto Hernandez, Dan Straily and Alex White.

“It’s the sum of the entire spring that we pay attention to, but you always want to leave a good impression in the minds of the decision makers and coaches and your teachers,” Hinch said. “They’re always big. And these guys that are pitching for a spot on the team or playing for a spot on this team as a position player, there’s a little bit of stress and pressure that goes into it. But that’s a good thing.”

Deduno and Wojciechowski will be on the mound Friday against the Nationals. The duo have pitched particularly well this spring, as Deduno has allowed one run in eight innings and Wojciechowski hasn't allowed a run in nine innings.

“It’s a point of emphasis for Sammy to get ahead and utilize all of his weapons,” Hinch said. “For Wojo to get ahead and for him to be able to expand on purpose is a great point of emphasis for him. Wojo’s changeup and Deduno’s fastball are pitches that we’re paying close attention to just because the effectiveness that they have on the hitters."

Astros' Samuel Deduno throws three scoreless innings Monday

by Brandon Wise | CBSSports.com
(3/16/15) Astros pitcher Samuel Deduno threw three scoreless innings Monday against the Nationals, recording three strikeouts and four hits. Deduno, who is competing for the fifth spot in Houston's rotation, came on in relief Monday and walked one batter.

In five innings this spring, Deduno has five strikeouts and a 1.80 ERA.

Astros' Samuel Deduno could earn spot in starting rotation

by Brandon Wise | CBSSports.com
(3/14/15) Astros pitcher Samuel Deduno may be the fifth and final starter in the starting rotation this season and manager A.J. Hinch couldn't be happier with his progress, reports MLB.com.

"Sammy's a good pitcher in a variety of roles," Hinch said. "I think there's an argument he would be very good in our starting rotation as a swing man. He provides a ton of value to a pitching staff, so we'll see how his spring continues to map out.

"You might see him [make a start] one of these next few outings just to watch him prepare and give him a full pregame. When he's throwing strikes, he's hard to hit, he's hard to catch. And he's very effective with his arsenal."

Deduno has made 42 starts over the last five years, posting a 16-19 record with a 4.20 ERA and 214 strikeouts over 293 1/3 innings.
