Dan Straily, Sam Deduno, Mark Appel provide Astros starting depth
|by Shawn Krest | CBSSports.com|
|(4/14/15) The Astros have plenty of depth for the starting rotation, both in the bullpen and in the minor leagues.
Asher Wojciechowski, sent to Triple-A on Tuesday, has pitched out of the rotation and bullpen.
"Obviously one of the things that we’ve liked during the competition this spring is we liked our depth," manager A.J. Hinch said, per the Houston Chronicle. "There are other guys behind them as well. I think the continual pressure on these guys to pitch well and do well is going to be there with guys like Dan Straily and obviously Mark Appel’s at Double-A. ... With Wojo now at Triple-A, he’s always a possibility. Sam Deduno in the bullpen is always a possibility. I think these guys always know they’re pitching for their spot. ... They know there are options."
Astros pitcher Samuel Deduno earns first save of the year
|by Brandon Wise | CBSSports.com|
|(4/12/15) Astros relief pitcher Samuel Deduno worked out of a jam in the 14th inning to earn his first save of the year in Houston's 6-4 win over the Rangers Sunday.
Deduno got the first two batters he faced out before giving up a single to Prince Fielder. Deduno then walked Carlos Peguero and hit Mitch Moreland with a pitch to load the bases. With a full count and the bases loaded, Deduno got Rougned Odor to line out to right to end the game.
Deduno lowered his ERA to 1.80 in five innings of work this season.
Astros' Samuel Deduno wins bullpen spot

|(3/29/15) The Astros have informed pitcher Samuel Deduno that he was won a spot in the bullpen and will pitch in long relief for the team, MLB.com reports.
"[Manager] A.J. [Hinch] talked to him and he was excited because when he came in the office he was a little nervous," general manager Jeff Luhnow said. "He had a big smile on his face when he left the office this morning."
Deduno was claimed off waivers by the Astros in August. He posted a 4.47 ERA and 83:46 K:BB ratio in 100 2/3 innings overall last season but pitched better after the move, giving up just three earned runs in 8 2/3 innings.
Astros' Samuel Deduno appears to be fading in SP competition
|by Michael Hurcomb | CBSSports.com|
|(3/26/15) It appears the competition for the final spot in the Astros' rotation is down to Asher Wojciechowski and Roberto Hernandez after Samuel Deduno pitched in relief Wednesday against the Phillies. It seems the Astros are lining Deduno up for a role as a sixth starter/long reliever.
“We wanted to simulate more of a long reliever role for him,” manager A.J. Hinch said of Deduno's outing Wednesday, per the Houston Chronicle. “We know we can stretch him out and he can start. He can throw a lot of pitches. He’s got a resilient arm, but he’ll have an outing here where he’ll go pitch, (have a) couple days off, pitch.”
Astros' SP competition down to Hernandez, Deduno, Wojciechowski
|by Michael Hurcomb | CBSSports.com|
|(3/23/15) With the demotion of Dan Straily to the minors on Monday, the competition for the final spot in the Astros rotation is down to Roberto Hernandez, Asher Wojciechowski and Samuel Deduno.
Although, general manager Jeff Lunhow seemed to indicate Hernandez, who is in camp on a minor-league deal, might be the favorite for the final spot in the rotation.
"You look at what's going on with other clubs around baseball, and there's a lot of injuries, and having extra pitchers that are major league-caliber is something we value," general manager Jeff Luhnow said of Hernandez. "That's definitely a consideration."
Wojciechowski has a 0.75 ERA through four spring outings (one start). Hernandez is 3-0 with a 4.50 ERA through four outings (two starts). Deduno is 1-1 with a 4.50 ERA through four appearances (one start).
