It has been an awfully strange couple of seasons in the A's bullpen. Whenever you think you know which way it is going to go, something flips the script. From Huston Street to Brad Zeigler to Joey Devine to now reigning AL Rookie of the Year Andrew Bailey, it has been quite a challenge keeping up. It figures the arm that began as a starting pitcher prospect would be the one that the A's resort to as their stopper. Now, there is no reason to believe Bailey won't remain the A's closer long term. Street was dealt to Colorado, Zeigler has revealed himself as merely a decent middle man and Devine wound up needing Tommy John elbow surgery that might not have him ready for the 2010 season. Bailey posted a great ERA and a knockout WHIP, striking out 91 batters to boot. Perhaps the only thing not to like about Bailey at this point is the fact the A's don't figure to be a contender in the AL West going into the season. That might be a function of perception vs. reality, though. While they don't have big names, they do have a developing young pitching staff that could sneak up to win a lot of close games and generate 30-40 save chances for the emerging Bailey. Consider him a solid pick among the top 15 closers to target on Draft Day. (Updated 1/20/10)
