Preseason Outlook

Of all the shortstops to reach the majors in 2009, Cabrera offers the most reason for excitement. No, his .255 batting average won't turn any heads, but he already seems to understand the art of leading off, reaching base at a .342 clip, which is high relative to his batting average. He also stole 25 bases in only 377 at-bats, making him a candidate to steal 40 this season. Like every player who comes to San Diego, he'll have to learn how to hit in the cavernous PETCO Park, where he posted an OPS 100 points lower than on the road. But since his game is more speed than power, the wide gaps might actually work to his advantage. He has enough upside to rank among the top eight or nine players at a weak position like shortstop, so if you pass on them early, give him a look late, particularly if you have a need for stolen bases in a Rotisserie league.
