Report: Angels no longer in play for Gordon Beckham
|by Igor Mello | CBSSports.com|
|(1/23/15) The Angels are no longer in play for second baseman Gordon Beckham, reports MLB.com on Friday. The team is now set on having Josh Rutledge, Johnny Giavotella, Grant Green and Taylor Featherston compete for second base/utility at-bats moving forward.
Beckham was non-tendered by the Angels on Dec. 2. He managed a slash line of .227/.271/.348 in 2014.
Angels unlikely to bring back infielder Gordon Beckham
|by Michael Hurcomb | CBSSports.com|
|(1/7/15) Angels general manager Jerry Dipoto said the team has has substantive talks with free agent infielder Gordon Beckham. However, it appears the Angels bringing him back are slim, according to the Los Angeles Times.
"The possibility exists that we’ll re-sign Gordon, but no promises," Dipoto said. "We’ve built up quite a bit of infield depth. As much as Gordon fits our club and we want to be open to it, the likelihood is that we do have our second baseman in-house."
Report: Angels going nowhere in talks with 2B Beckham
|by Marty Gitlin | CBSSports.com|
|(12/17/14) The Angels remain interested in bringing back second baseman Gordon Beckham, but negotiations have stalled, according to the Orange County Register.
The free agent landed with the Angels late in the season before being non-tendered two weeks ago. His numbers have been unimpressive since a strong rookie year of 2009. Beckham managed a slash line of .227/.271/.348 in 2014.
|2014 summary: After a typically lackluster first 4 1/2 months, Gordon Beckham suddenly found himself without a regular job, having been shipped to the Angels to play a utility role. As you might expect, his final numbers weren't up to snuff, but he wasn't on pace for anything better prior to the trade. In two years since hitting a career-high 16 home runs, he has hit a combined 14.|
Playing time status: Now a free agent, Beckham has a chance fo find regular at-bats elsewhere, but given his lack of production in a full-time role, he'll likely have to come off the bench again. He's versatile enough to get 250-plus at-bats regardless, but you'd have to play in an especially deep league for those numbers to amount to anything.
2015 outlook: Beckham has shown decent pop at times and has never had a problem making consistent contact, but with a career .245 batting average and .681 OPS, he was just getting in Fantasy owners' way as a starter. In his projected role, he could be something like another Sean Rodriguez, if that's in any way exciting to you.
