| Cruz looking like backup catcher |

(2/13/13) The Cardinals plan to keep Tony Cruz as the backup catcher this season, though the backstop still has to prove himself in camp, reports MLB.com Wednesday. The Cardinals signed J.R. Towles and Rob Johnson for depth, but manager Mike Matheny still likes Cruz for the role. "[I told them] that Tony did a great job for us last year," Matheny said. "I don't want to have them under the misconception in that this is a wide-open spot because Tony did everything asked of him last year."
