| Cruz looking like backup catcher |

(2/13/13) The Cardinals plan to keep Tony Cruz as the backup catcher this season, though the backstop still has to prove himself in camp, reports MLB.com Wednesday. The Cardinals signed J.R. Towles and Rob Johnson for depth, but manager Mike Matheny still likes Cruz for the role. "[I told them] that Tony did a great job for us last year," Matheny said. "I don't want to have them under the misconception in that this is a wide-open spot because Tony did everything asked of him last year."

Wainwright throws CG, Cards sweep Giants in doubleheader
Adam Wainwright struck out 10 in his 14th complete game and third this season, and the St. Louis Cardinals completed a day-night doubleheader sweep of the San Francisco Giants with a 7-1 win Saturday night.

Rookie Shelby Miller pitched seven shutout innings and backup catcher Tony Cruz hit two doubles and drove in a pair of runs, leading the St. Louis Cardinals to an 8-0 victory Saturday over the San Francisco Giants.
